split from the rest

Very much part of the regional Melbourne based caravan manufacturing scene, Royal Flair has been around since the mid ‘70s, owned continuously by the Deralas family. A boutique manufacturer with ISO 9001 certification, Royal Flair produces a range of caravans with something for everyone. Some of the stand out models include the Raptor, designed for those who like adventure on a big scale, or the Piazza, with its front fold down deck, for those who like to take it easy. In between are a number of other models, including the Designer Series, something of an up-market model which comes with plenty of features. I had an opportunity recently to check out one of the larger models, the DS 23-4 because I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee for tow testing and Australian…

go with the flow

I’m a bit smitten with the River. It might have something to do with the fact that it’s easy to drive — even if you’re just recovering from shoulder surgery — and it might also be that this RV turned out to be my knight in shining white armour — my ‘escape pod’ from COVID-19 lockdown. I’ve been lucky enough to test drive the River twice this month — once in the Clare Valley with food writer Di Mattsson and the second time in Victoria’s Yarra Valley on my own. On the Clare Valley sojourn, Di did the driving as I was just shy of being ‘allowed’ to drive following shoulder surgery. DRIVEABILITY It was Di’s first time driving an RV and she was surprised at how easy it was. “Actually not much different to…

best of both worlds

Since getting their start in 2011, the Opus team have become global leaders in caravan and camper trailer design and production. This is largely due to their innovative approach and focus on accountability to their customers. Their latest releases bring the camper and caravan philosophies together in a pair of tough hybrids, the OP13 and OP15. We’ll be looking at the larger OP15 in a future issue, but today let’s turn a spotlight onto the smaller, more nimble OP13. What the OP13 may lack in length it makes up for in convenience and manoeuvrability. Combining toughness and luxury, the OP13 offers a pop-top roof, Truma internal shower and toilet, a king sized innerspring mattress, bunks and an internal cooking space as options, and plenty of other inclusions that come as standard. The…

new england, the southern way part 2

Picking up where we left off last time — just south of Gilgai, a satellite town close to Inverell, NSW — we'd just spent an afternoon with Rob from New England Wood Turning. Believe me, we can still smell the fresh sap, stains, and resins that permeated from the shed within which Rob turns his magic. Again, this is a must-visit. Rob is a charm and there is plenty of room to drive in with a full-size caravan. No excuses, travellers. Our convoy of caravan, camper, and photography car needed to rest after days of pushing the limits of safe driving. After rushing to get from the northern edge of the High Country to its geographical heart, Inverell, we consulted some locals to find a park with sunset views and open…

compact in size not in stature.

At the end of the day, you have to be happy with what you do. And if you're a manufacturer of camper trailers, you have to be satisfied with the product you put out to market. This is especially the case if you are a one-man band that designs and builds your own camper trailer from the ground up. Chatting with John Huth (owner, CEO, CFO, labourer and floor sweeper) of Condamine Campers about his latest camper, the Compact, you can tell he's pretty happy. He has every right to be. NEW KID IN TOWN John has been building camper trailers out of his shed in South-east Queensland since late 2014. First, there was his flagship Condamine Camper followed by a toy-hauler variant. Never one to sit on his hands, 2020 has seen…
