easy cruis'n entry level

Atlantic Caravans is a manufacturer that has been around for just on 10 years. Based in Campbellfield, aka the caravan manufacturing capital of Australia, Atlantic might get a bit lost among the larger players, but it produces a good range of caravans — road tourers, family vans and those suitable for offroad travel — or in other words, something for everyone. Among that category comes the E›Series, a range of caravans aimed particularly at entry level buyers. My review van, an ES190-1MD, or E19 for short, came from Parravans Caravan World at Windsor, NSW. It’s a mid-door entry van with an external length of 5.9m (19ft 4in). ON THE ROAD “The E19 is not an overly long van and with a tare of just 2170kg, it’s a fairly light towing prospect” Towing the E19…

A while ago, The Wanderer sent a small team on a research trip to New South Wales' Mudgee wine-growing area and needed a couple of motorhomes along as support vehicles. I like the Mudgee area and was charged with taking along an Avida Esperance for the ride, so it wasn’t a tough gig. Australia’s largest motorhome manufacturer, Avida, offers a wide range of models on different cab chassis. The Esperance, built on an Iveco Daily chassis, has an external length of 7.94m (26ft) and is available in three different layouts, two with slide-outs. In this case, the C7932 SL does have a slide-out and the vehicle has been upgraded from the standard 4490kg GVM to 5200kg. Given the motorhome’s tare of 4352kg, it offers a surprisingly high payload of 948kg. That’s…

a helping hand

With bushfires, drought, floods and the COVID›19 lockdown, the first half of 2020 has impacted every part and person of Australia in one way or another. One group in particular that has been hit hard by these events are our farmers. Though they are a hardy bunch who dig in and hope and plan for the future when the going gets tough, our farmers need a helping hand. This is where Rural Aid comes in. Founded in 2015, Rural Aid aims to provide holistic support to rural areas and farms across Australia. The starting point of Rural Aid was the successful Buy a Bale campaign, initiated in 2013 by Charles and Tracy Alder, which has so far delivered over 160,000 bales of hay to farmers in need. Today, Rural Aid has expanded to…

boundfor high places

With things starting to open up, it’s time to decide where to head first. If you’re looking for a place that has everything from national parks, historic sites and towns, culture and arts, to places to wine and dine and scenic drives, the New England High Country is the place to go. Located in north-east New South Wales, the New England High Country is extremely easy to get to, with lots to see and do. Numerous roads, including a series of beautiful tourist drives, allow travellers to get in and around the area. Together with a brimming list of must-sees, everything is there for a road trip to remember. NEW ENGLAND HIGHWAY The major artery of the New England High Country is the eponymous New England Highway. Stretching 878km from Hexham at Newcastle,…

Last year, I got to take the 2019-spec X1 camper trailer out for a weekend in the bush. By luck or good fortune, I managed to find myself back at Patriot HQ recently, this time hooking up their Desert Ops X1-N behind my ute. The first thing you'll notice about the new Patriot X1-N Desert Ops is the colour. Going for that 'retro' feel, the team have chosen to use Sandy Taupe, a factory Toyota colour harking back to 40 series LandCruisers. The next thing you'll probably notice is the slightly more aggressive stance of the X1-N Desert Ops, thanks to it being fitted with 35in tyres. Apart from these couple of characteristics, the X1-N Desert Ops remains largely unchanged from the 2019 X1. DIGGING A LITTLE DEEPER What does the 'N' actually stand…
