far too soon

The news hit me like a slap across the face, just as I took my first sips of coffee on a Sunday morning. An email from someone named Mark Catlin informed me that his daughter, Kelly, had died by suicide the day before in her campus apartment at Stanford University. My jaw dropped. Could it be that Kelly Catlin? Just a few weeks prior, I had exchanged a flurry of emails with Kelly, who was a prominent member of the U.S. women’s Olympic pursuit team. Kelly wanted to write a journal for VeloNews.com and prodded me for a topic. In addition to Olympic track and road racing, Kelly was pursuing a computational mathematics graduate degree at Stanford. She mentioned that her coach, Gary Sutton, had to oversee her math test just a…

Kelly Catlin (1995-2019) The cycling community spent this spring mourning Kelly Catlin (second from left), who died by suicide on March 7 in her on-campus apartment at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Catlin was a standout member of the U.S. women’s pursuit team that won Olympic silver in 2016 and claimed the UCI world title for three consecutive years (2016-2018). Catlin was also a multi-talented individual with passions outside of cycling. She spoke fluent Chinese, played the violin, and was pursuing a graduate degree in computational mathematics. “She was incredibly good at academics. She was incredibly focused on her cycling, and she had so much in her life beyond that,” said her brother, Colin Catlin. “Kelly was driven to be the best.”…

Last year you won stage 5 of the Giro Rosa. How important was that result? To win the stage and take the leader’s jersey, even if it was just for a day, it was super awesome. Last year was my first year coming to Europe full time, and I joined this huge team. I did really well in the U.S. the year before. I felt like I was a good cyclist, but you don’t really know how that compares to Europe. And when your teammates are world champions like Ellen van Dijk, you’re just a little intimidated, and you want to make sure that you’re doing a good job for the team. Are you adjusted to racing in Europe? Yes, I’ve always really liked it. I’m lucky in that I can navigate my…

summer moak

Summer Moak first rode a racing bicycle at age 11 when the local velodrome in Katy, Texas, held a camp. A year later, Moak swept her events at junior track nationals. Moak’s parents home-schooled her starting in eighth grade so she could focus on racing. Now 19, Moak recently won the Tucson Bicycle Classic in a field sprint. “I tell people I’m an all-around racer because I don’t classify myself,” Moak said. “I can time trial okay and my sprinting is good. I’m working on my climbing.”…

“I don't like to have pressure or to be nervous. I don’t think that makes any sense.”— Egan Bernal (Team Sky), on why he’s happy with his leadership role at the Giro d’Italia in just his second grand tour 77 Race days as a member of a WorldTour team for Egan Bernal, as of March 15, 2019 “There isn’t a second in which we wouldn’t freely give our lives in exchange for hers.”— Mark Catlin, on the death of his daughter, Olympic silver medalist Kelly Catlin, 23 Average WorldTour race speed (kph) “If there was a document that I could sign, which would mean I’d lose everything I’ve earned in 11 years as a professional if I intentionally doped, I’d sign it straight away.”— Matthias Brändle (Israel Cycling Academy), after the fallout of “Operation…
