from tragedy to triumph

‘I WENT OUT OF MY WAY TO SABOTAGE MYSELF’ Lis Cashin, 51, is a wellbeing coach and motivational speaker and lives in the Cotswolds. ‘NOBODY BLAMED ME, BUT ME’ It’s true that just one event in your childhood can go on to shape the rest of your life. In 1983, aged 13, I was competing in javelin at the school sports day. I remember watching the javelin catch the wind and head towards my classmate. To my horror, it hit her above the eye and as she fell, I was terrified I’d blinded her. It was much worse. Paramedics arrived and she was rushed to hospital, and when I was told she’d died, nothing could have prepared me for the trauma and anguish. People tried to comfort me, but no words took away the…

the secret to weight loss

If you’re guilty of opting for unhealthy foods then restricting your eating for the rest of the day to stay in a calorie deficit, it might be time to start counting your macros. This will encourage you to make healthy choices, by keeping your carb, fat and protein intake in balance. So how do you do this? And why is this so important for weight loss? Our experts have the answers. WHAT ARE MACROS? ‘Macros are macronutrients required by our body for major processes, including energy metabolism,’ says nutritionist for F45 Training, Kimberly Bowman. ‘There are three key macronutrients including carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Carbohydrates and protein provide four calories per gram, while fat provides nine calories per gram. Each macronutrient plays a specific function in the body for our overall health.’ Carbohydrates ‘Carbohydrates consist…

how to count your macros

Learning how to count macros can be extremely beneficial, but it can often take some time to understand. David explains: 1 WORK OUT YOUR BASAL METABOLIC RATE (BMR). This is how many calories your body needs to function when resting/sleeping/not moving etc. The easiest way to do this is using the Harris-Benedict Equation. BMR = 655 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) – (4.7 x age) 2 HOW ACTIVE ARE YOU? From the below, decide how active you are, then multiply your BMR by the number next to it: ✱ Little or no exercise: 1.2 ✱ Light exercise – you exercise a few times a week: 1.375 ✱ Moderately exercise – you exercise three to five times a week: 1.55 ✱ Heavy exercise – you exercise five to seven times…

why are macros so important?

‘Macros make up your calories. Your total calorie consumption is key if you are training towards a fitness goal or trying to lose or gain weight,’ says David. It’s very hard to lose weight if you are consuming too many calories, or to build muscle if you are not eating enough of the ‘right’ kind of calories. ‘Knowing your ideal macro intake will help you to consume the right amount of protein, carbs and fat to reach your goals and ensure your body is consuming the optimum amount,’ explains David. It isn’t an exact science as it’s dependent on your weight loss or fitness goals – whether that’s reducing body fat or gaining muscle.…
