Over the past few years, kindness and gratitude have been two of the hottest buzzwords in the health world. And for very good reason. According to a growing army of psychologists and wellbeing experts, finding joy in the success of others, and making a conscious effort to lift them up, is one of the fastest, easiest ways to boost your own happiness levels. Something I can confidently say from experience is 100 per cent true. Just one example? Last month, 50 legends from my Sydney-based gym flew almost 16,000km to tackle the New York City Marathon. While the time difference itself probably isn’t the cause, it can play a role in two other factors that definitely affect your period – stress and birth control. If you’re not on the pill, it’s probably the stress of a disrupted routine. “Travelling can cause irregular periods as it changes your body’s circadian rhythm, affecting your cortisol levels, which interferes with normal ovarian function,” says Dr Mike Brown, a consultant gynaecologist. Different time zones can throw you off schedule, but the pill is designed to be taken every 24 hours, so it’s best to keep to that. CATE CAMPBELL Winner: Women’s Health Sportswoman of the Year & Comeback of the Year What a legend!
