There were presentations by 10 finalists that passed the initial screening, whose proposals had been selected from among 268 accepted (658 submitted), followed by interviews by judges, and then prizes were awarded: one First Place prize, three Second Place prizes, and six Honorable Mentions. In light of the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), during this final round the public viewing of entries was canceled, and discussions with the 10 finalists were conducted via teleconferencing. This evokes an exciting puzzle: there are so much more demands placed upon architecture than existed in the past, from regulations and codes to the expectation of improving inhabitants’ wellbeing, and from engaging multiple stakeholders to engaging with sustainability concerns. Each of these requirements can be addressed using a variety of ideas and ideals. But often competing ideas within the profession can seem incompatible with each other. Some practices avoid such conflicts in their work by adopting one approach and sticking to it. We work in…
