In this edition, we get to show you what we did on the Camper Outback Pub Experiences adventure. For months this trip has been deferred, but finally, the travel gods smiled upon us, and we headed to outback NSW to check out some epic pubs with partners from Austrack, Wonderland, Bushtracker and Opus. We also had some gear from Ampfibian, Off-Grid Adventure Co, iSi Advanced Bicycle Carrier Systems, Enerdrive and Superior Performance Batteries to check out. It’s not often that when we review a camper we get to have it for more than a day, but the benefit of Austrack joining our Outback Pub Experience with their offroad hybrid, the Tanami X13, meant that I had plenty of time to have a good look at it. It also allowed me to see how an imported hybrid handled the conditions that 95 per cent of its owners will want to take it. We towed the Tanami X13 on a variety of road types, from bitumen to maintained gravel roads, desert sands and heavily corrugated tracks as well as crossing many cattle grids and navigating washed-out creek beds, and all were handled comfortably. The planning had spilled into months, the event was delayed multiple times due to border closures and travel restrictions, but suddenly it was time. But even as the participants left their hometowns, Mother Nature decided to have a say with storm clouds brewing. New South Wales was on Armageddon alert by over-enthusiastic fear mongers, while, one by one, outback roads began to close as rain coated the region. Some regions had over 25mm dropped on them, a top-up from what they’d enjoyed only a week or so before.
