The Constitutional Court will today hear the SA Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) case against three major banks for their tendency to apply for default judgments in the high court against debtors who owe amounts as small as R7 000 on their home loans. The three banks are Standard Bank, Nedbank and FNB, which are the first to third respondents, respectively. The fourth to 16th respondents are individuals against whom summonses were issued in the high court by the banks in various matters. The cases involved instances where the banks were claiming payment in respect of alleged default on mortgages or motor vehicle credit and these were consolidated and heard by a full bench of the high court. DA federal council chairperson Helen Zille, columnist Ivo Vegter, and Resolve Communications, a PR company connected to former DA leader Tony Leon, dismissed the accusations by the Liesbeek Action Campaign (LAC). The LAC had alleged they colluded to create doubt on the authenticity of indigenous groups opposed to the development on what the groups considered sacred land. The LAC and its partners want to preserve the site as part of the national estate. THE South African Navy celebrated a monumental moment yesterday during its launch of the first of three new multi-mission inshore patrol vessels (MMIPV 1) at the naval dockyard in Simon’s Town. Honoured guests included Defence and Military Veterans Minister Thandi Modise, Chief of the SANDF General Rudzhani Maphwanya and Secretary for Defence Ambassador Gladys Sonto Kudjoe, all of whom were signatories of the official handover. A Soweto man who posed as a Joburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer to stop and rob vehicles was nabbed by the police at his home on Monday. The 39-year-old man was arrested as a result of an intelligence-driven operation. Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello said: “The police pounced on the suspect at his property where a reported stolen iPhone was recovered together with 14 reflector jackets of the JMPD. “It is alleged that the suspect used these reflector jackets to pose as a police official and stopped people on roads with the intention to rob them.” The police added that further investigations revealed that the suspect, who was a driver of a courier company, was linked to 12 cases of robbery, of which the suspect was a victim…
