Dear Reader, When you think about American race car history several names come to mind: PENSKE, SHELBY and CUNNINGHAM. Of the three, CUNNINGHAM was the only yachtsman. In 1958, he skippered the 12-Meter class, COLUMBIA to win the right to defend the America’s Cup. The competition to represent America was fierce with COLUMBIA besting VIM by 19 seconds at the finish. This is the equivalent of a 1.9 second gap at the checkered flag on the race track. And then, Cunningham properly disposed of the British challenger, SCEPTRE in 4 straight race victories in the choppy waters of Newport Rhode Island.
