In an era of ceaseless digital communication, sometimes it helps to pause for a moment, and opt for more leisurely enjoyments. Certainly, the August edition of Bazaar tends to be one in which we allow ourselves to dream; and this issue is true to that tradition. Private views, opening nights, exclusive visits, hidden gems…be part of the Bazaar world LAPADA As part of the LAPADA Art and Antiques Fair, Harper’s Bazaar and Rebecca Davies, the CEO of LAPADA, are hosting a debate with some of the country’s foremost fine-jewellery dealers, who will discuss the joys of collecting and reveal the secrets of their trade. Don’t underestimate the power of a straightforward black and white look: there is drama in graphic simplicity. atticchic Modern vintage would be one way to describe this, perhaps the season’smost compelling trend. 1 A SUNRISE The trailblazing MarcQuinn is back, bolder than ever and subverting scenes of daybreak By SOPHIE ELMHIRST MarcQuinn’s outfit ismore apocalypse than artist: white boiler suit, gas mask, black steel-capped boots.You could go to war in this get-up, diffuse a bomb. Instead, Quinn is in his studio making paintings of a sunrise (with toxic spray-paint, hence the garb). A sunrise – that greatclichéof holidayphotography, the shortcut to beauty. But Quinn’s version, in the form it will take at the White Cube gallery in Bermondsey this summer, is not your typical sunrise. The original photograph, taken byQuinn on aCaribbean beach one morning, has been printed onto a canvas, painted over, sanded down, layered with chains and ropes and painted again, taken outside and laid on a grimy London street and painted yet again,…
