Welcome to the November issue of Harper’s Bazaar, which celebrates the art of fashion, and the relationship between fashion and art. These elements have always been at the heart of Bazaar, from the days when its covers were produced by leading artists such as Erté, who first started working for the magazine a century ago, in 1915. In the subsequent decades, Bazaar’s contributors have included Jean Cocteau, Man Ray, Andy Warhol and Richard Avedon; and in the three years since I became editor of the magazine, we have also published a series of limited-edition art covers for the V&A, including one by Tracey Emin that has become a sought-after collector’s item. The prints and embellishments of the 1970s provided Tabitha Simmons with her starting point for A/W 15. Building on these, the designer looked to architecture and tapestry to create a collection rich in colour and texture. ‘I was initially influenced by the rock ’n’ roll aspect of the 1970s, which is reflected in the block heels and beading,’ says Simmons. ‘I then looked to Victorian architecture for its intricate details, specifically the gates at Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.’ That scrolling ironwork inspired the swirling patterns of the Augustine and Aura styles, which were reinvented in velvet and lace for evening.
