At the time of writing, it’s not been particularly cold in the UK this winter – but it ain’t over yet. Last winter it was cold right up to early April, so there’s still plenty of time. And that means there’s loads of time to get the most out of your Land Rover before the fresh shoots of spring arrive. I’ve already encountered snow – I was in north Devon in December when we had a light dusting and I managed to get on to some greenlanes. With just a few months to go until Helen Tait-Wright and Haley Bennett line up on the start line of the 29th Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc, the British duo are in the thick of their preparations. On the banks of a working French quarry near Nantes, the pair are subjecting their Defender 110 to a rigorous shakedown, flinging it repeatedly into the fast, loose corners, getting a feel for the handling and responsiveness of the vehicle they hope will carry them to victory. Along with their 110 hard top ‘Priscilla’ (a real Queen of the Desert), the duo will be the first all-British team to take to the start-line of the gruelling two-week off-road rally, rolling into the Moroccan desert alongside 129 other all-female teams after a glitzy opening…

This Defender’s stand-out distinctive finish is a mix of Mad Max and steam punk, wrapped around the hard top’s curves by Blue Lizard in Crawley. The rally includes a vehicle beauty competition – and Helen and Haley’s attempt to catch the judges’ eye has been to venture down a rat-look finish of rust and decay. Explains Haley: ‘We wanted it to look like it’s stood in a desert for 20 years, which took some explaining to the wrapping company. We’re both artistic so we wanted to do something different – but it took a lot of sketches and emails before we were happy.’…

At last! After years of procrastination, Land Rover has confirmed the new Defender will be unveiled in 2019 before arriving in dealerships in 2020. This suggests to us that the reveal will be late in the year, possibly at the Frankfurt Motor Show – where the DC100 concept was shown in 2011. The press release is a teaser and includes the line: ‘With an all-new exterior and interior design respecting Defender’s unmistakable shape…’ We’ve spoken to people close to the vehicle and they have said they have never known a body-test mule so well camouflaged. So, what we’re seeing isn’t what we’ll get – and it may look closer to an old Defender than we expected.
