One of the things I said when I was (a lot) younger, was that I wasn’t really fussed about travelling abroad until I’d explored all of Great Britain. There is such a vast range of places to visit, roads to drive and scenery to enjoy that you don’t really need to have a passport to have an adventure. For many university students, the summer break is a welcome opportunity to take some time out from seminars, essay-writing and late-night library sessions – time to chill, go travelling or earn a few bob delivering pizzas or waiting tables. Not for Exeter University undergraduate Ollie Fielding, though. A family friend was keen to own a Defender that was a bit different from the crowd, and Ollie and his pal Duncan Hyde were just as keen to turn that brief into something tangible – so the would-be owner gave the guys free rein to come up with something memorable. And that’s how, during his three-month break in 2018, they embarked on an ambitious project to fit a Chevrolet LS3 V8 engine into a 2003 Defender 90. ‘It all started out with a conversation…

When he’s not working on Land Rovers, Exeter University student Ollie Fielding is studying for his degree in mechanical engineering. The 20-year-old hopes to devote more time to creating custom Land Rovers and aftermarket accessories after completing his course. Friend Duncan Hyde has with many years’ experience making vehicles go faster, including racing hovercrafts, speedboats and motorbikes. Duncan’s engineering business, Repairs Unlimited, regularly tackles projects even more challenging than custom Land Rovers. It was in Duncan’s workshop that this Defender was created – using the tools and skills acquired over a lifetime.…
