There have been loads of great Land Rovers over the years, and we’ve whittled them down to the top 10. They’re the models that have, in one way or another, made great contributions to Land Rover as we know it. Discovery 1 A much-needed third addition to the brace of Land Rover models that made up the range in the late ’80s, the Discovery is often quoted to have saved the company – because it did. The Disco, developed on a tight budget, was designed as a bridge to span the gap between the utilitarian Ninety and One Ten and opulent Range Rover. It burst on to the scene in 1989 – initially with only a two-door body style – to cater for the family and lifestyle sector, and it was a great success. Combining the proven Range Rover chassis, the new 200Tdi diesel engine, a tall, airy body and an interior designed by Terence Conran, the Discovery made a fantastic package. Experts from the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) have helped with the final phase of testing of the new Defender before the eagerly anticipated launch. The testing has taken place in the blistering heat of the United Arab Emirates – close to where IFRC’s first Land Rover, a Series I converted to a mobile dispensary, was used in 1954. IFRC has its global vehicle base in Dubai, so it was the perfect location for testing the still-disguised new model, while maintaining ties with the charity which is in its centenary year. The schedule included driving punishing sand dunes as well as the hairpins of the renowned Jebel Jais highway, which winds its way up the tallest mountain in the UAE. The Series III that the Manic Mechanics were due to overhaul on the Polybush stand at the LRO Show has been stolen. Owned by team member Gary Tuffnell for years, the Land Rover had been parked up in a yard near Milton Keynes awaiting attention. It’s fitted with a 2.5-litre petrol engine, front light bar with G4 spotlights, Mach 5 wheels, Recaro bucket seats and tub-mounted fuel tank.
