Much of it is well-known, but there’s still chunks that are coming to light. Stuff that would have just been another day at the office for those involved, but is fascinating now we’re looking back at it. Like the floating 80-inch. Many of us can clearly remember our first experience of greenlaning in our own Land Rover. For Eric Durham, that moment came about four years ago when he followed his mate Dan Williams’ Discovery 3 in his own recently bought Disco 4 along Wayfarer - one of the best-known greenlanes in North Wales. Eric was hooked. Initially, he had intended to keep his Discovery as merely ‘a pavement princess’ but that first greenlane adventure changed everything. Transforming a daily driver Eric’s Discovery 4 is his daily driver as well as a tug for his Scout group’s trailer; he’s a Scout leader. ‘Initially, I was running the road tyres that it was on when I bought it, 255/55 R19 Pirelli Scorpions, but I soon swapped these for same-size Goodyear Duratracs,’ says Eric. The Velar is the latest Land Rover to gain hybrid propulsion with upgrades for the 2021 model year. The P400e echoes other models - including the Defender - with a 296bhp petrol engine mated to a 105kW electric motor, pushing it to 60mph from rest in just 5.1 seconds. It has a range of about 33 miles on pure electric mode. Mild hybrids are now also offered, with the 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engines that are being introduced across the whole of the ‘full size’ range, in diesel (D300 - 296bhp) and petrol (P400 - 395bhp) options. As with the other models, the engines available to you are dependent on spec - the D300 is only available in R-Dynamic and above models. Bob Durber We’re sad to report the death of Bob Durber. Bob (67) was a stalwart of the Land Rover scene, in his role as senior steward.
