Hello, and a big Minecraft-y welcome to 2022! This promises to be an amazing year for our favourite game, and what better way to start it by leaping into its big new update! Have you downloaded Caves & Cliffs Part II? It’s available now, and we’ve been digging deep into it this issue. Our bumper guide kicks this very issue off! On top of that, we’ve been looking ahead at what Minecraft has in store for us over the next 12 months, and we’ve crammed in as many of your builds and pictures too. INCREASED WORLD HEIGHT Perhaps the biggest change to this version of the game is that the world no longer stops where it used to! That’s right: now if you tunnel down to where bedrock used to be, you’ll find yourself encountering deepslate and an additional 64 levels of rock that you can explore. The game has also added another 64 blocks in the sky, making the maximum height of the world level 320. This isn’t just for new worlds, either – old worlds accessed in version 1.18 will add new layers on the top and bottom of existing map areas, and the new world generation type will blend seamlessly with the old one. STEP ONE: VISIT THE NETHER You can’t summon the wither without first collecting the stuff you need from the Nether. That means opening a Nether portal. You can either build one or restore a ruined one to working order – either way, you need to collect obsidian to do this. Obsidian can only be gathered using a diamond pickaxe, and forms naturally where water flows over lava source blocks – or you can plunder one ruined portal to repair another! Build a portal frame (at least four blocks wide and six obsidian high), then ignite the portal by using a flint & steel on the inside of it. 1. A COTTAGE Rather than trying to make a giant mansion, why not try to make a perfectly manicured cottage instead? Put it next to water or a lake, and landscape the area to make it as cosy and welcoming as possible – focus on the small details, rather than making a huge but mostly empty building! 2. A BANK & VAULT We all have plenty of valuables in Minecraft, so why not try to protect them in a bank with an underground vault?
