Housebuilders should provide fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband as standard in new homes, the Local Government Association (LGA) has said.
At the moment, developers need only provide water and electricity supplies before selling a property, leaving buyers to arrange their own telephone and internet connections.
FTTH broadband can provide download speeds of up 1Gbps (1,000Mbps), much faster than fibre-to-thecabinet (FTTC) speeds, which rarely achieve anything above 76Mbps.
The LGA also called for housebuilders to use an industry-wide kitemark for new homes that had FTTH, giving buyers confidence they were getting top-of-the-range broadband, and would not be left “stuck in the digital slow lane”. This would in particular reassure house buyers in rural areas, the association said.
