The relationship between wildlife and luxury travel has evolved dramatically over time. In past generations, wildlife excursions meant, let’s face it, the ability to afford the exploitation of animals in distant places – whether on safari, visiting unethical zoos or leaving a permanent mark on the wilderness. In my own experience, when I’ve had the privilege to look into the eyes of a leopard or catch a glimpse of an endangered frog, I cannot imagine that former mindset. But I cannot ignore that we, as an industry advocating tourism, bear some of the blame for the past.
