Born in the 1980s and raised in the 1990s, Millennials – such as myself – will recall the South African Grand Prix without fully grasping its content, or the narrative of its departure from the country, its return and then eventual cancellation. Much like many other sporting codes, Formula One withdrew from South Africa due to the important and justified boycott of the apartheid regime, the last race running in 1985. The SA GP, first held in 1934 in East London, would return for two years after the embargo on the country was lifted in 1992 and 1993 but the financial implications of holding the event once again resulted in its cancellation.
