Saudah Saleem: We often see nature as a luxury to have in design versus a necessity: If only I could afford to have natural lighting. But the solution can be as simple as creating an opportunity for more natural light. I have conversations with my clients about their experiences with nature. They often involve their fondest memories—camping or getting out of the city. My goal is to bring that back into their home. Michelle Gage: We bring nature inside through color but also through print and pattern. In almost all the projects we do, there’s at least one funky wallpaper, if not eight. OUR LIVES LITERALLY REVOLVE AROUND THE SUN, BUT NEVER MORE THAN ON BALMY DAYS THAT beg for a dip in the pool or a round of lawn games. Just as essential as getting outside is having a shaded place of refuge from the heat—call it a pool house, pavilion, or cabana. The goal, says architect Stan Dixon, should be to “design a space that feels enclosed yet is full of light.” Screens, slats, big windows, and canopies allow a breeze to drift through and may offer some UV protection, but they won’t encumber a view of the action. “A vacation in the backyard.” When Charlotte Lucas got the call from her clients about designing a 2,000-square-foot poolhouse for their Atlanta home, she envisioned an actual getaway. “They’re big travelers,” says the Charlotte, North Carolina–based designer. “They’ve stayed in some beautiful luxury hotels and resorts, and we wanted to bring that elevated style and design to their backyard.” Inside, a vaulted ceiling is covered in bamboo, the floor is hand-painted in a black-and-white geometric pattern, and leafy and trellis-inspired prints are splashed on upholstery and walls. Outside, red-and-white cabana-stripe fabrics evoke long beach days in the French Rivieria—Lucas used them on pillows, dining chair cushions, and fabulous umbrellas by the pool. All this pizzazz couldn’t compromise the necessary funtionality of the building, of course, so Lucas used performance fabrics throughout. “The…

I NEVER OWNED A PLANT until I moved to the Hudson Valley. However, one of the first things I did when I purchased a weekend house was build a vegetable garden, because isn’t that what one does in the country? When I moved here permanently years later, I remembered that first garden. After it was built, I found the teeniest corner that fit one bistro chair, where I could sit peacefully, listening to nothing and watching the plants grow. It was bliss. Last year, my vegetable garden doubled in size when I became less than enthusiastic about shopping in supermarkets.
