One of my favourite things to do in the weeks after we publish a new issue is to stalk our social media accounts and peek into our inbox. Reading your comments always enlightens me, whether you’re cheering us on or chiding us for a misstep. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that there’s no topic more sensitive than money. And when you don’t think we’re giving you the straight goods, you let us know. (OK, make that two things.) Not long ago, a reader took me to task about my bedroom makeover, featured in our March issue. PHIL CROZIER Photographer, “The Cost of ‘Wow’” (page 58) An award-winning photographer, Phil is currently designing his modern coastal home on a remote bay in Nova Scotia. One thing you’d break the budget for? Flattering and dimmable bathroom mirror lighting — it creates a fashion photo shoot feel. What’s in your dream bathroom? A floor-to-ceiling picture window. I dream of a bathroom with an epic view and welcoming retreat vibes! SAMANTHA SACKS Writer, “Change of Pace” (page 68) The owner and principal designer of Toronto boutique firm Sam Sacks Design and a mother of three, Samantha loves decorating for families. Budget find you’re most proud of? A rug I spied at the bottom of a pile on my first trip to Marrakesh’s Medina. Favourite thing about your bathroom? My bathtub. There’s no problem…

But it was the sense of family and history that really made the connection for me. I would’ve enjoyed reading more detail about the nine-month renovation and how the family managed during that time. — SHAUNA I enjoy your magazine, but I’m hoping your photographers will start to use the same angles when producing before and after shots of rooms. It’s difficult to see the total impact if there’s a different view used. Hope you see my point? — BRENDA PATERSON Editors’ note: We agree! And while we do strive to shoot our before and after photographs from the same angles, it sometimes isn’t possible — like when…

INSIDER TIPS Style Wise Designers’ best shortcuts for stunning rooms without the sticker shock. SHEA AND SYD MCGEE, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH “I love classic linen drapery. You can usually find a few yards of 100 per cent linen fabric at discount textile outlets for under $10/yard. We have it made into custom drapes to get the perfect height, nice pleat details and a high-end look.” ALEXANDRE BLAZYS, MONTREAL “My partner Benoit Gérard and I sometimes stretch our budget by using big-box kitchen cabinetry from Ikea or The Home Depot. We dress it up with beautiful hardware and stunning countertops and backsplashes.” OLIVIA BOTRIE, TORONTO “Save money by eliminating a kitchen backsplash and, instead, install a six-inch vertical slab of countertop…
