And we were together for a long time. So long that even the builder next door said to me, ‘Let’s be honest now, Terena, it’s high time that your son moved out’. But high time or not, an empty nest is an unpleasant thing. (And 28 is not that old!)Because I’m not keen on uncomfortable voids in my heart or my house, I quickly decided to find something to fill them. STRIPPED, BUT NOT OF TALENTWhen we first came across Liesl and Lische Cronje from Kuils River, the initial impression was how lovely they are and the second was how well they had coped when they became one of the very many families who have had the work mat pulled out from under their feet. Stripped of the luxuries to which they were accustomed, this mother and daughter found a way to enjoy their creativity together. Liesl writes short reflections on life and Lische illustrates them. They collaborate under the name LiLiBeth. Their first contribution to Ideas is on page 120. Liesl is a life and business coach and freelance brand architect. Lische is a third-year student in hotel and business management. The Li’s from Liesl and Lische combine as LiLi,…

diana@ideasfactory.co.zaFictionA Keeper by Graham Norton (Coronet, R301)Elizabeth Keane returns to Ireland after her mother’s death, intent only on wrapping up that dismal part of her life. There is nothing here for her; she wonders if there ever was. The house of her childhood is stuffed full of useless things, her mother’s presence already fading. And perhaps, had she not found the small stash of letters, the truth would never have come to light. Forty years earlier, a young woman stumbles from a remote stone house, the night quiet but for the tireless wind that circles her as she hurries into the darkness. She has no sense of where she is going, only that she must keep on. This compelling novel confirms Graham Norton’s status as a fresh, contemporary literary voice. The…
