Welcome to 2019! The start of a shiny new year means that race season is only a few short months away (hurray!). So have you set your goals yet? Whether that’s your first tri or you want to smash a PB, we’ve got your back. Turn to p89 for our 8-week beginners’ training plan, or if you’re going long, find everything you need for M-dot success on p28. It’s always worth remembering that plans may need to change, though! I’m just back from racing the Nevis Triathlon (that’s the Caribbean Nevis, not the chilly Scottish one), an impulsive winter addition to the end of a season derailed by a series of annoying, niggling ankle problems. So for me, 2019 is about working on some serious S&C (p45) to keep injury-free.…

the best triathlon kit reviews

We take gear testing seriously – you need to know that the kit you buy will help you reach your goals in all three disciplines and work as hard as you on race day. Our test team is made up of experienced triathletes, cyclists and runners who test each product that appears in 220 to the max during training and racing, rating it honestly for performance and value. JACK SEXTY A triathlete since blowing his student loan on a bike, sub-2hr Olympic athlete Jack moved to Ironman at Lanzarote in 2016. Happiest when in the open water, she also competes in swimrun. Key season goal The 32-mile…

all power to the people

For professional endurance sport to succeed, transparency has to be a cornerstone. As history shows, if there’s an aura of secrecy, faith in the product ebbs away. But is there a limit? At what point does disclosure in the name of fair racing become both invasive and erode any legally-gained competitive edge? To test attitudes in tri, I asked the top 10 male and female pro’s from the Ironman Worlds to reveal their power data from the 180km bike leg. Power – measured in watts – simply shows how much force cyclists are pushing through the pedals, which combined with other factors such as aerodynamics, weight and resistance, determine how fast the bike travels. “Releasing power files is contentious, but the upside is fairer racing” The responses covered the spectrum. Of the 20…

2xu comp full zip sleeved

Has one of the best just got even better? The previous edition of Australian outfit 2XU’s snappily-titled Comp Full Zip Sleeved was the overall winner of our men’s sleeved tri-suits grouptest in 2018, and now the 2019 has arrived with us early with a host of upgrades. The major change is the increase in compressive technologies, with the 105D Power Mesh fabric on the quads aiming to ensure muscle stabilisation and less vibration to reduce soreness. The fabric also includes mesh and dimpled areas with the dual aim of increased ventilation and aerodynamic improvements, respectively, as well as UV protection. Elsewhere, there’s an Italian chamois targeted at long-distance cushioning, a full-length zip for race-day convenience and two rear pockets. Two-piece and vested versions are also available. Find out how the Comp Full Zip…
