I was at Chandigarh airport when I received the message from Khushnu Panthaki Hoof that her grandfather, BV Doshi, had been announced as this year’s Pritzker Prize winner. I did a little dance, right there at the check-in desk. How fabulous, how unexpected, how clever of the Pritzker Prize committee to honour the ninety-year-old charmer from Ahmedabad! But then came the buzz kill realization: how the hell should AD cover the colossal achievement of the first Indian to win the most prestigious award in architecture? Within days of the announcement, I’d decided that there’d be no predictable black-and-white portrait on the cover.
