wide versus narrow

LAST MONTH SUZUKI LAUNCHED A 250-CC GIXXER AND AN UPDATED 150-CC GIXXER. The first ride on both these bikes was held at the Buddh International Circuit. After riding both the motorcycles everyone said that the 250 was not as nimble and quick to steer as the 150. Both the motorcycles share the same chassis with identical steering head angle and wheelbase, but one steers quicker than the other. Nobody knew why that was happening. The answer is very simple: the 250 runs on a wider set of tyres compared to the 150 and this slows the steering response. Fit the 150 wheels and tyres on the 250 and you will see that it is as quick and nimble to steer as the 150. Incidentally, today the “expert” opinion-making journalists are able…

Is Heating an Issue? I read your magazine regularly. I happened to read your recent reviews of the Ducati Scrambler Icon and Desert Sled in which you had mentioned a big problem: heating. I currently own a Kawasaki Ninja 300 for street use. I have not done long-distances riding. I have been contemplating the Ducati Scrambler Icon for a long time. It is my dream bike, but I changed my mind again and again because of this issue. While riding in the city, to what extent, in your opinion, is heating an issue in the case of the Scrambler Icon? Karthik, Tamil Nadu Dear Karthik, As we mentioned in our review, heating is definitely an issue to consider when buying the Ducati Scrambler. Now, how badly it will affect one depends on one’s…

suggest an appropriate bike

I am planning to buy a bike later this year during the festive season. My budget is less than Rs 2 lakh. My daily running is about 45 kilometres. Please suggest a good motorcycle to me. Personally, I like the Yamaha R15 V3 with ABS. My daily riding consists of about five kilometres within the city and about 40 km on the highway. My average speed remains around 60-65 km/h. I love sporty bikes. What would you advise me? Shuvam Das, via social media Hello, Shuvam, If you can extend your budget a little, the new Suzuki Gixxer 250 SF is a great option for you to consider. If not, you may definitely go in for the Yamaha R15 V3.0 since it is a model that you already fancy and will fit in…

paradise lost

IT’S A CURIOUS FEELING. IT’S BEEN A while since I’ve ridden a motorcycle on the road and now, aged 61, I’m not sure how I would feel about doing it again after the brief absence. As I have noted before, we self-employed learn not to get too attached to our toys, so, during a slow business period, my collection of seven Italian thoroughbreds got eaten, one by one. All I have now is a 1964 Honda CT200 Trail 90 project I picked up as a non-runner at a yard sale, as one would take in a stray dog in urgent need of care. Not exactly MV Agusta territory, but even if I get it running, it’s unlikely to kill me. My MV Brutale had a strong chance of doing just…
