forged in style

Workshops are the birthplace of the most wonderful creations, where people share knowledge and put skills into practice. It’s a space of intimacy, personality, and sociability–three characteristics embodied by the Diesel Open Workshop, a kitchen and bathroom collection by Scavolini in partnership with Diesel. Just like a busy workshop, the kitchen consists of several functional areas with various languages and materials. Metal and glass make up the strong industrial approach of the collection as the technique from aluminum forms and soft steel finishes meet the style of smoky and ribbed glass designs. The Stock Rack system brings inspiration as the starring role in this collection as it introduces modularity through its clever mix of solids and voids which makes for limitless composition possibilities. These key design features are also found in…

create a contemporary composition

Redesigning your home, while exciting, can be quite a daunting task. There is a tendency to stick to plain colors, traditional-looking furniture, and conservative pieces due to the plethora of choices. These elements all seem to fit together perfectly but they lack personality and can seem flat. Add some flair through contemporary items for a truly modern home. Here are some tips to get you started: Partner up plains and prints Most people would say that prints should remain minimal in order to avoid clashing with the other elements in the space, but we say otherwise--prints bring life to the room, while plains harmonize with them and give emphasis. Liven up your living room with a bright sofa paired with patterned chairs, and throw in some plain and colored pillows to balance…

four filipino finalists in 2019!

“Please be nice,” said one finalist. “Please be brutal,” said another. And so the World Architecture Festival finalists got an exhilarating and satisfying mix of tough queries, insightful comments, suggestions, and encouragement from the crowd of 80 architects and designers at the technical rehearsal hosted by BluPrint and Grohe. The WAF is the only global architecture competition that requires shortlisted architects to defend their work in live ‘crits’ before an international jury and audience. The tech rehearsals that BluPrint and Grohe hold (this year is our fourth) are intended to help our finalists prep for the WAF crits. More importantly, they model for the local community how we might conduct substantive critiques. Unfortunately for our country, the professional design organizations discourage critiquing. The aversion towards questioning and saying what’s what has…

world architecture festival 2019

Elizabeth Diller of Diller Scofidio + Renfro will give the closing keynote address at the WAF in Amsterdam on 6 December 2019. She follows a stellar line-up of 48 speakers shaping the global architecture agenda over the three-day event. The festival runs from 4-6 December. The WAF program takes advantage of host city, Amsterdam, with an Open Building Summit on the Festival Hall Stage on 4 December that explores a new generation of Dutch architects implementing the principles of Open Building, a philosophy first introduced by John Habraken in the Sixties. Dutch architecture and design speakers include Petra Blaisse, founder of Inside Out; Marc Koehler of Marc Koehler Architects; and Ben van Berkel, founder of UNStudio. They are joined by established architects from across the world, including Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas; Andrew…

making sense of the white matter

White Matter’s works range from hospitality, residential, and commercial projects in Thailand, Taiwan, and Cambodia. FURI Times Square Mall is the first mall and, therefore, a celebrated structure in the coastal city of Sihanoukville in Cambodia. The USD 10 million shopping complex is a joint venture of FURI Real Estate and investors from Macau and Hong Kong aimed at Chinese tourists, who have dominated the tourism growth in the city for the past years. Covering one hectare of land and four stories high, the shopping mall is environment-friendly, according to FURI Times Square project director Chin Chanlen in an interview with Khmer Times. The mall has two volumes—one shaped like a triangle and the other almost like a boomerang—connected on the top levels. With glass all over, brise soleil keeps the…

dissolving silos

Bold and human. That’s B+H’s claim about their studio culture, approach, and designs. In this case, a porous and cohesive ecosystem where two institutions—one for teaching and the other for healing—would cooperate to optimize their services for their respective publics. The National University Centre for Oral Health, Singapore (NUCOHS) will serve 500 patients a day when fully operational, a 40 percent increase in the hospital’s capacity. The center will offer subsidized treatments for the elderly and those with special needs. It is built with treatment rooms for patients who are not mobile, for those with claustrophobia, and those with behavioral issues. In addition to clinical dental services, the building will also house dentistry education and research facilities, including labs to accommodate 80 students and specialized labs for post-graduate specialists. According to B+H,…
