May 2020 Issue 562 Some things are worth getting out of bed at 4:00am for. Not holidays, that’s for sure – I’d rather pay more or change the destination to avoid stupid o’clock flights. But cars, particularly those I haven’t driven before, that’s different. Which is why I found myself, bleary-eyed, in North London, nosing my BMW daily driver past electric security gates to an underground car park. Amid sombre BMWs and Mercedes lurking between concrete pillars, our Ferrari F430 Spider cover car enticed me over. Owner Marek Izmajlowicz was away on business but he was happy to let me collect the keys from his girlfriend and disappear off to our studio for the day. With the car, not the girlfriend. The sound of that flat-plane crankshaft V8 erupting sharply into life was…

‘there’s nothing difficult here; it excels as a keen driver’s car’

Contrasted against biscuit beige gravel, the deep grey and chrome flares of a 1958 Lancia Aurelia leave Classic Cars reader Paul Greenway in a trance-like state. A Lancia Motor Club member of three decades’ standing, he owns a Fulvia Sport Zagato and has previously owned two Delta Integrales, a Beta Monte Carlo and a 2000 Volumex HPE. Fans of the marque don’t come much more committed – and today he’ll drive his dream model. Paul explains, ‘People in the club have always told me so much about the Aurelia. I’ve been told I need to try a Lambda, an Augusta and more, but the B20 Aurelia, being a grand tourer, is the one I had to try first. If it’s good enough for Juan-Manuel Fangio…… Walking around the car, he’s already enjoying…

1980 FORD ESCORT MKII ‘My first car; I bought it off my mum when I passed my driving test. I’ve many fond memories of it from when I was growing up.’ 1978 LANCIA BETA MONTE CARLO S1 ‘Bought for a bit of fun when I got my first company car. Ferrari 365BB aside, this is the first car I’d ever wanted to own. Replaced by an MG Metro Turbo – not my greatest decision…’ 1989 LANCIA DELTA HF INTEGRALE ‘My favourite car ever. It did 60k miles in 2.5 years without missing a beat, including a trip to Romania. I added 16v wheels and a Hormann rear spoiler when bodykits were all the rage.’ 1990 LANCIA DELTA HF INTEGRALE 16V ‘A multi-award-winning concours car but it was used on many track days too. I kept it for…

what price exclusivity?

Over the last few years I’ve told you several times to watch the 2004-2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti – and it’s still a wise buy. The 456 replacement may look visually underwhelming but this front-engined V12 Ferrari is good for 199mph, and can still turn the heads of Those Who Know. Especially when you consider that the 612 has the same engine as the 575 Maranello and a spaceframe chassis used in the 599GTB. There’s some of the best Modena DNA here. The 612 was also one of Ferrari’s most expensive road cars, and had a comparatively low production run of just over 3000 units. So, given all those distinctions, how does £43,000 sound? In February Bonhams sold a 2005 at Rétromobile with 40k and history for £42,944. Sub-£50,000 for a 612 is…

My 1993 BMW E34 540i SE was my daily driver from 1995 until 2013. After a two-year £30k restoration so that it would be my daily driver for another 18 years, it came home looking so lovely and driving so beautifully that it went straight into my small collection; how could I watch it deteriorate again? Have you ever done something like this? How do I live with this uncomfortable reality? I’ve had to lie to my wife about the cost… And will it ever become the sought-after classic that I see becoming economically worthwhile? Simon Garling NOT SURE WHETHER NOW’S THE RIGHT TIME TO BUY, SELL OR HANG ON TO THAT CLASSIC? Email classic.cars@bauermedia.co.uk with ‘Ask Quentin’ in the subject line. I can’t help smooth the waters with your wife, and no, I…
