As I clambered in and slid across to the driver’s side, it occurred to me that I was about to extend my earliest-car-driven marker by some margin. The machine – a 1909 Vauxhall B-type; the venue – the grounds of Luton Hoo Estate. A chilly December drive in a Santa’s-sleigh-red Edwardian car with the promise of lunch in a stately home – the perfect finale to my classic motoring year. There was just the small matter of mastering the machine. Centre throttles, vaguely connected steering and acceleration with the reluctance of a hungover mule are traits that persisted long after this car was built. None applied here. ‘a sweet symphony’

The mid-Nineties Jaguar Sovereign that pulls tentatively into the car park of our Bell Inn meeting place in the New Forest is a dead giveaway. He may be over half an hour early, but I know it’s going to contain our serial Jaguar-owning reader, Mark Dollery. Intros done, we’re straight onto car-guy talk, which is easy conversation. Lamborghini Countach ‘The ultimate classic Italian supercar. Is it as awful as some people say?’ Ferrari Dino 246GT ‘Most beautiful of all Ferraris. Got my attention in The Persuaders .’ Aston Martin V8 Vantage (’77-’78) ‘The ultimate classic Aston – the DBS shape and all that power.’ AC 428 ‘British/Italian/American hybrid with independent coil suspension.’ Ferrari 365GT4/400 ‘A more practical Ferrari, but still with Weber-carbed Colombo V12.’ Maserati Bora ‘I’ve always liked the Bora’s unusual styling – sleek yet muscular. The mechanicals interest me too.’ Iso Grifo ‘Italian styling with strong, reliable US V8s – near perfect ingredients.’ Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C3 ‘That shark-like frontal styling. 1966 AUSTIN MINI COOPER ‘What can I say? Extras included 4½in wheels, bucket seats, Moto-Lita wheel and a rev counter. And it all cost me £425 in 1979 – those were the days.’ 1972 TRIUMPH STAG ‘I took a chance with this. Some superficial rust, dull chrome and grubby interior, but the engine ran well and it didn’t overheat. After respraying the body, I ran it for a few months. time to bag a bargain jaguar mk2

Restored Jaguar Mk2s in driving condition are now selling for less than £20,000. In November Anglia Car Auctions sold a ’67 340 in Old English White with 91,000 miles on the clock and a recent engine rebuild for £14,628, while Brightwells sold a very sharp Opalescent Grey ’66 3.4 manual with overdrive, fully restored in the Nineties with chrome wires, an engine rebuild by renowned outfit VSE and extensive history file for £17,360. ‘The Mk2 isn’t the force it was, so prices may continue to soften’ These older restored Mk2s now look like cracking value, having had huge sums lavished on them in the Eighties and Nineties. Even 3.8s aren’t that expensive now, with Castle Classics in Sussex offering a 1960 Old English White 3.8 auto with 56,000 miles, four owners, chrome…

bmw m6 convertible

A low-mileage BMW M6 V10 convertible for less than £20k – surely that can’t be right? But it is. Munich’s E63/64 200mph drop-top with its F1-derived engine and 4.1sec 0-60 time has become shockingly affordable. The German Motor Group in Bedfordshire has a 2007 M6 convertible in black with 40,000 miles and full BMW and specialist history along with a folder of receipts for £19,995. James Paul in Sussex has a 2006 convertible in silver with 53,000 miles and full history from new for £18,990. These are normal retail prices that will slip lower in the next few months, making the M6 one of the best-value M-Power cars on the market today.
