Luxury means different things to all of us. For me it’s breakfast on the balcony as the sun comes up, but you might be hankering after butler service, or a private island; on page 37 we reveal the top 20 luxury cruises for the year ahead, while on page 30, broadcasting legend Jennie Bond shares her experiences of cruising on Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth. Meanwhile, I sample the exquisite culinary offering on board Oceania’s Riviera (page 50). Honestly, it’s a wonder I’m not as big as a house. silver spirit is stretchel

With a shower of sparks and excited applause, Silversea’s luxury cruise ship Silver Spirit was dramatically cut in half. Just 24 hours later, a new 49-ft mid-ship section had been installed so work could start on a momentous upgrading for the 2009-built vessel. Filippo Oddo, Director of Palermo’s Fincantieri shipyard, declared: “Silver Spirit will leave this shipyard not only longer but more beautiful and more comfortable.” GRAND MAKEOVER The ship will have 34 new suites and a greater choice of restaurants when it reemerges in May. Just half of the “north of $70 million” budget was spent on the extraordinary engineering feat of stretching Silver Spirit from 195.8m to 210.7m at the Fincantieri shipyard in Palermo, Sicily, on 10 March. The rest of the money is being spent on a total refit of all suites, restaurants…
