hot spot

MACHU PICCHU, PERU For hundreds of years, high in the Cuzco region of the Peruvian Andes, an Inca mountain fastness lay abandoned and hidden from the world, its existence known only to a few local peasants. That changed on 24 July 1911 when American explorer Hiram Bingham was led to its ruins. What he saw amazed him: a vast complex of temples, stores, homes, terraces and plazas built from polished dry-stone walls. Today, cruise passengers can enjoy a guided tour of this magnificent citadel and view its spectacular structures including the Sacred Plaza, Principal Temple, Intihuatana (Hitching Post of the Sun), Temple of the Three Windows and Intipunku (Sun Gate), which still stand sentinel over the long-gone Incan empire. >>Turn to page 89to read about Latin American cruises…

Orlando Ashford, president of Holland America Line, said: “As our company was founded in Rotterdam more than 143 years ago, it was fitting to return to our roots for Koningsdam’ royal dedication.” In the evening the ship set sail for Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and fireworks lit up the sky as Koningsdam passed Hoek van Holland. Thousands of Dutch residents turned out throughout the day to join in the special events. During…
