process over product

A couple of years ago I attended a series of workshops with performance psychologist Dr Shona Erskine about managing performance anxiety in dance students. I found these workshops fascinating on many levels, both as a teacher and a person who has always found any kind of public performance nerve-wracking. In particular I found it interesting that we didn’t immediately focus on preparing students for performance. Instead, Shona talked to us extensively about our day-to-day teaching, how we imparted corrections, how we motivated our students. She talked about the importance of focusing on the process of learning rather than end-goals such as performances, competitions or examinations. She talked about giving less verbal feedback to students and allowing them to experiment with different approaches to work out the best way of executing a skill…

audition for houston academy!

THE Houston Ballet Academy is coming to Australia in January as part of an international audition tour for its 2019 Summer Intensive Program. Since its founding in 1955, Houston Ballet Academy has provided the highest quality ballet training to aspiring dancers. In the words of the company’s Australian Artistic Director Stanton Welch, “Houston Ballet Academy is the very foundation of Houston Ballet, where we develop our future company.” The Academy’s faculty includes teachers who have performed with Houston Ballet and other prestigious companies around the world. In addition to being the fifth largest ballet company in America, Houston Ballet also boasts Houston Ballet II, which provides students with the opportunity to dance leading roles in varied repertoire, allowing the dancers to develop performance experience, while serving the community by providing quality,…

australian ballet 2019

THE Australian Ballet 2019 season boasts a number of creations by Australian choreographers, including our “greatest living choreographer”, Graeme Murphy. He is applying his fertile imagination to the delightful Oscar Wilde story, The Happy Prince. The ballet will open in Melbourne in March (19-28) before heading to Sydney in May (1-18). Another successful Australian, Stanton Welch, will stage a new adaptation of the 1876 classic, Sylvia. The ballet will debut at the Houston Ballet (where Welch is artistic director) in the US in February before arriving in Melbourne, August 31 to September 10 and Sydney, November 8 to 23. Stephen Baynes, Timothy Harbour and Alice Topp (newly named resident choreographer) will share the bill in “Verve”, exclusively in Sydney in April (5-25). The AB is also playing host in 2019 to the renowned…

wa ballet comes alive!

AS a live artform, ballet defies nature. It transcends the limitations of a human body. Each movement is a unique moment created for the audience, a moment that is the compilation of years of hard work and commitment, a moment than cannot be missed. With this in mind, West Australian Ballet’s Season 2019 will be an exploration of the theme “live and alive”. The year will start as usual with Ballet at the Quarry, entitled “In Synch” (February 8 – March 2). The triple bill includes Reincarnation, a unique collaboration with Co3, WA’s contemporary dance company, and choreographer Garry Stewart; In Synch, a conceptual work by Artistic Director Aurélien Scannella and Artistic Associate, Sandy Delasalle; and X-It, by Finnish choreographer Johanna Nuutinen. From May 9 to 25, WAB will present La Bayadére,…
