editor’s letter

After all the waiting, they’re almost here. At the time of writing, the new iPhones are just over a week away, and they’re probably in the stores by the time you read this. But were they worth the wait? The iPhone X made huge leaps forward in technology, and Apple traditionally alternates between a big step forward and an ’s’ release that consolidates its gains, and so it proved here. The iPhone Xs is basically more of the same, with existing features beefed up rather than new ones added. Likewise, the iPhone Xs Max seemed a likely release. We might have expected it to be called the iPhone Xs Plus, but again, a bigger version of the ‘main’ Apple iPhone seemed likely. But what about the iPhone XR? It isn’t the first…

touch me now!

On 5th September 2007, Apple released the iPod touch. In a nutshell, it was ‘an iPhone without the phone’, offering the same feature set as the iPhone, which had been released 18 months earlier and was already an incredible success, with the exception of mobile data, telephony and a camera. It could get onto the Internet using Wi-Fi, had the same 3.5-inch touchscreen as the iPhone and used the iOS operating system. The first generation of iPod touch came in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB capacities and could run up to iOS 3.1.3. Interestingly, following the discontinuation of the iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano in July 2017, the touch is the only iPod that’s still on sale. It’s come on a long way since the early days though. You can now get…

“we’ve taken this mission further than anyone could’ve imagined.”Tim Cook“Apple was founded to make the computer more personal.”Tim Cook, Apple CEO What a show! From the Mission Impossible themed intro video to the closing sequence, Apple’s awesome keynote certainly kept the audience enthralled. In addition to the lucky few who managed to see Tim Cook and friends live at the Steve Jobs Theater, tens of thousands watched the live stream at home. Expectations were high and Apple certainly delivered, with some excellent product unveilings. First, head honcho Tim Cook took us through a few facts about the company. “Apple was founded to make the computer more personal,” he explained, “first with the Apple ][, then later with the Mac. Over the years, we’ve taken this mission further than anyone could’ve imagined.” Unsurprisingly,…

iphone xs

All About the iPhone Xs The iPhone Xs is the spiritual successor to last year’s iPhone X and as such, has a lot to live up to. The casing is made from a surgical grade stainless steel and comes in three different colours: gold, silver and space grey. If you’re worried about dropping your iPhone in a puddle, you’ve nothing to fear. The new model can be submerged in up to two metres of water for up to 30 minutes with no ill effect. The iPhone Xs has a Super Retina Display, which measures 5.8 inches from corner to corner. It’s an OLED screen, with a resolution of 2436 x 1125; that’s 2.7 million pixels. Side by side with the last generation’s plus-sized phone, the iPhone 8 Plus, the new iPhone Xs…

fantastic for photography!

“Even professionals are using [iPhone cameras]”Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing In photography, the bokeh effect refers to the blur caused by areas of the photo being left deliberately out of focus. It was used in the Portrait Mode introduced by the previous generation of iPhones but now, with the iPhone Xs and Xs Max’s Advanced Portrait Mode, it’s taken to a whole new level. Just look at the quality of these selfies. Advanced depth segmentation in the new iPhone’s Portrait Mode gives you even more control over your bokeh effects. Depth Control lets you dynamically adjust the depth of field, and therefore the level of blur, before and even after you’ve taken the photograph to create portraits with a beautiful background blur. Just look at the difference it…

iphone xs max

All About the iPhone Xs Max The iPhone Xs Max is this generation’s plus-sized iPhone. That is, it matches the ‘regular’ version for its specs, such as the A12 Bionic processor, 60% better colour dynamic range and dual SIM capabilities but with a bigger screen. In this case, it’s a 6.5-inch corner-to-corner Super Retina Display, which again stretches from edge to edge. Compare this with the iPhone 8 Plus, which is almost exactly the same size of phone, but only has a 5.5-inch screen. The new model is clearly leagues ahead of the old one. One advantage offered by the larger screen format is that when you turn your iPhone to landscape mode, that is, hold it horizontally, many apps make use of the extra screen size to give you a sidebar…
