letter from the editor

His own man Ayushmann Khurrana is that savvy batsman, who quietly scores a century, even with singles. In the end, it’s not the showmanship that counts but sheer application of the basics. Ayushmann has concentrated on honing his craft and choosing content over banners. He has surely and steadily emerged as the most unconventional superstar of them all. He’s humble, down-to-earth and doesn’t believe in flooding social media with his antics, knowing that his work alone will win him a following. The quality that separates him from the crowd is that he doesn’t refrain from taking risks. He proved that with his first film Vicky Donor itself, where he played a man, who sells his sperms to earn money. It was a never-seen-before scenario, which talked about how couples are pressured by…

man behind mardaani

Gopi Puthran started his career as a writer with Lafangey Parindey (2010), starring Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepika Padukone. The film, directed by Pradeep Sarkar, didn’t do well at the box-office but helped Puthran form an alliance with producers Yash Raj Films. He then wrote Mardaani (2014), directed again by Sarkar, and won plaudits for his screenplay. Recently, he made his debut as a director with the hard-hitting Mardaani 2, which carried further the story of hard-boiled cop, SP Shivani Shivaji Roy, played by Rani Mukerji. Inspired by true rape and murder incidents, the story follows Shivani, who goes up against a 21-year-old rapist, Sunny Prasad Yadav, played by Vishal Jethwa. It was Aditya Chopra, who asked him to direct the sequel since as a writer Puthran knew the universe of…

birthing success

The last year ended with Good Newwz. The film starring Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani, directed by debut director Raj Mehta, grossed more than 150 crores. Raj, understandably, is on cloud nine. He hasn’t yet come to terms with the good news. It has to yet to sink in. Box-office numbers aside, he’s happy that the film connected with the audience. “I never could have dreamt of such kind of response,” he says. Perhaps one reason why Good Newwz got so much love is that it deals with the sensitive issue of married couples being pressured by their families to have children. The story came to writer Jyoti Kapoor when she herself was trying to conceive a baby through IVF. She also heard that two…
