udta punjab!

Punjab has always been to me a land of lassi served in foot-long tumblers and the best rajma chawal and butter chicken. Yes, I have always been a fan of Gurdas Maan and have succumbed to the jive of Badshah and Yo Yo Honey Singh of late. I have even watched a couple of Punjabi films at Jimmy Shergill’s insistence as he’s a longtime friend. But my association ended there. The one thing Punjabis are known for is their hospitality and they took my team and me under their wings and made sure everything went off smoothly. I must thank Prabhjot Mahant and Manjeet Hans of Prinday, who made the event their own…

desi dreams

It could well be dubbed as the Pink of the rustic landscape – a film that takes on misogyny in a small town. Debutant director Avinash Das’ Anaarkali Of Aarah is yet another bold statement on a woman’s right to say ‘no’. Not only has the small film won big raves for its feminist theme but Swara Bhaskar, as the feisty protagonist, has been hailed for her heart-wrenching performance. The story spotlights Anaarkali, a street singer and dancer. who’s sexually assaulted by a politician... and her battle for vindication. It was a real-life incident that inspired the journalist-turned-director to make Anaarkali... “I happened to see the music video of an erotic song, Hare Hare Nebuaa, sung by the Bhojpuri folk artiste Tarabano Faizabadi. While she was singing expressionlessly, it was juxtaposed…

wonder women

SHOWBIZ IS BELIEVED TO BE A MAN’S WORLD, BUT IT’S THE WOMEN WHO MAKE IT TICK. We’re not talking about the battle of the sexes here. It’s not some ‘pink revolution’ that we’re talking about either. Rather, these women from the Hindi film industry are like the Amazonian warriors. Fearless, feisty and ethereal. They have proved their mettle at the box-office and have carved out their identity not just in the acting space, but as people wielding power and enjoying a rock-solid position. If the Khans are superstars these ladies are in a league of their own. Names like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone have even transcended to international stardom. A feat that our desi heroes still can’t lay claim to. Resilient girls like Madhuri Dixit, Kajol…
