‘It’s often said that Rory’s best golf is better than anybodyelse’s. But it’s DJ who gets my vote as the all-round best’ If all of the world’s best golfers bring their ‘A’ game to a PGA Tour event, who wins? For the past few years, general consensus among the keenest observers of the game is that Rory McIlroy would prevail. There’s no doubt that Rory in full flow is a supreme sight to behold. On his day, there’s no more impressive driver or ball striker. But for all of the Irishman’s long-game prowess, it’s Dustin Johnson who gets my vote as the player with the most complete all-round game.DJ is every bit long as Rory off the tee, and just as gifted with his iron play. But where he comfortably outpoints…

the feud that could split golf

It’s been three months since the Rules of Golf underwent their biggest changes in decades and it’s fair to say things haven’t exactly gone smoothly. At the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the first European Tour event with the new rules in play, leading players described the new knee-height drops as “absurd” and “a terrible change, not doing any favours for our sport”. The following week, Haotong Li was handed a two-shot penalty on the final hole after officials deemed his caddie had breached new rules preventing caddies from standing directly behind their player’s line when they take their stance. The ruling cost Li £80k in prize money and was called a “shockingly bad decision” by Eddie Pepperell, “a disgrace” by Ross Fisher, “a ludicrous decision, making a farce of the…

good rules, bad rules

GOOD Reduced search time Something that directly helps alleviate slow play. Hurrah! Putting with the flag in A common sense move that works well, provided players don’t engage in flagstick hokey cokey. No penalty for accidental move Not being penalised for accidentally causing your ball to move when searching for it or on the putting green is fair and just. BAD Caddie assistance Poorly applied so far, but the principle is valid. Spike mark repair Impossible to determine what is and isn’t a spike mark, and slows down proceedings. Knee-height drops A needless change with minimal benefits and plentiful downsides.…

the barometer

UP Mark O’Meara The 62-year-old ended a victory drought dating back to 2010 with a win at the PGA Tour Champions’ Cologuard Classic. Kid Rock Making your first ace is a great moment, but the musician made it even sweeter by doing so in front of Jack Nicklaus at the Bear’s Club. Vijay Singh Rolled back the years with a third-round 65 (at age 56) in the Honda Classic, finishing sixth for a first top 10 in nearly three years. Kevin Mitchell The 27-year-old had never won a professional event before holing a 15-footer on the final hole, pipping Rickie Fowler and Brooks Koepka to win the Honda Classic. DOWN Rickie Fowler Shanked his second shot of the day OB during the Phoenix Open, then dropped from shoulder height, incurring a further penalty. Mullion Golf Club The Coverack Masters, a small tournament held…

sergio garcia

The 39-year-old Spaniard is enjoying one of the best spells of his career, with eight top-10 finishes in his last 10 starts, including a win, plus a Ryder Cup performance that saw him win three points from four and become Europe’s highest ever points scorer. The biggest blot during that period was a DQ at the Saudi International, where Garcia took his frustration out on several putting surfaces. On the two-year anniversary of his Masters victory, he tells GW about his major ambitions, playing by the rules, and his fractious relationship with Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington. 1 How do you reflect on the incident in Saudi Arabia? I’ve obviously had some time to reflect, and want to again say I’m sorry to my fans and fellow competitors. What happened is not…
