Harper's Bazaar India April 2019

Harper’s Bazaar is the oldest, continuously published fashion magazine in the world; Harper’s Bazaar has been the bastion of fabulous fashion for more than 142 years. As the 29th international edition, Harper’s Bazaar India matches the exacting standards that its cousins have set around the world in the areas of fashion, editorial content, and photographic superiority. Harper’s Bazaar India is a magazine that celebrates the best in luxury, design and style. It’s where fashion gets personal. While it’s a fashion magazine, and the emphasis is on fashion, it is also a champion of personal style. Harper’s Bazaar understands that women want to know the latest news and fashion trends, yet encourages a very personal expression of that style. It believes women are fabulous at every age, and is committed to celebrating that in every issue.

Tarun Khiwal is one of India’s leading fashion photographers, who completes 28 years in the industry this year. He has worked with celebrities likeAlia Bhatt, Radhika Apte, and Shah Rukh Khan. In this issue, he captures our cover star’s bright energy and optimistic spirit in ‘Let The Sunshine In’, pg 138. “I was truly inspired to see Sonali with the same spark and zeal she had the first time I shot her, this was when Sarfarosh released in 1999. She’s a true fighter and what she had to go through has only made her stronger.” Sanjukta Sharma is a journalist, film critic, and ovarian cancer survivor, at work on her book on memories of an Indian woman’s body. circle of life

MY FAVOURITE MEMORIES OF MY MOTHER ARE BITTERSWEET. I remember her shaking her booty to MTV Grind, as though the line ‘dance like no one is watching’ was written just for her. I remember her joy over a multi-coloured pedicure—each nail a bright and shiny shade. In the first instance, we were in hospital, and she was getting yet another round of chemotherapy. And in the next, she was choosing to focus on the rainbow at her feet instead of the grim prognosis that her cancer was spreading. The April issue of Bazaar is personal. Deeply personal. In our cover story with Sonali Bendre, writer Sanjukta Sharma starts the feature with a line that is heartbreakingly beautiful: “Cancer’s most terrifying burden, its unpredictability, is often also a gift.” One of the most…

HAUTE COUTURE BY JOHN GALLIANO, 2004 John Galliano began his tenure as creative director in 1996, as the house celebrated its 60 anniversary. His work often paid homage to key figures from Dior’s life and his runway shows were full of spectacle and drama. This gown epitomises Galliano’s talent for fantastical storytelling through garments. It is inspired by 1950s pin-up girls and the 19 century Austrian Empress Elisabeth, and is accessorised with an orb, sceptre, and a crown of Swarovski crystals. Christian Dior by John Galliano (b.1960), Haute Couture, Autumn/Winter 2004. MUGUET, LILY OF THE VALLEY, DRESS, 1957 Lily of the valley, or muguet in French, was Christian Dior’s favourite flower and several of his creations were inspired by it. This white, cotton organdie dress has nine cascades of lily of the valley-inspired garlands…
