Swimming pools have a tendency to elicit waves of different emotions. They easily conjure idyllic days in the sun. Their blue water asks you to forget life for a splash or two. Creating art is the act of creating mirrors in everything you see. I realised early on that my love for art and photography had less to do with shooting the outside world, but rather, capturing the inner mind and using the external world to reflect it. While my work predominately focuses on people, my goal has always been to capture the heart of a person, an experience, or a belief, rather than simply capturing its outward beauty. Art is a kinetic, living, breathing thing, just as we are. It is wild and changes with how we evolve. That is what excites me, which I always keep in mind when I create. Free the bird, and then it will fly.…

a place to call home

A quick scroll-through of Vern Yip’s Instagram account will immediately reveal a life dedicated to family, travel and good design. There, in a succession of the designer and television star’s photographs, are images of husband Craig Koch and their two children, Vera Lillian Beatrix and Gavin Joshua Mannox, at their well-appointed homes or in glamorous and exotic places, their faces brimming with smiles. The couple have their home base in Atlanta, Georgia, but they also have their second house, a vacation retreat, in Rosemary Beach, Florida. The location is a scenic four-hour drive from Atlanta, along a stretch of white-sand beach and clear water. And unlike snooty Palm Beach or party-central Miami, Rosemary Beach is relaxed and chill. Their home on the beach is a welcoming, sun-filled multi-storey abode, which has become…

“I WANTED TO CURATE AN OTHERWORLDLY ATMOSPHERE THAT’S FIRMLY BASED UPON RICH CULTURES” For those who have seen the ornate spaces conceived by James Tu Interiors, you’ll be ready for the same level of lavishness when you step inside this 4,500sqft abode for a family of four. Situated in Zhuhai’s Xiangzhou district – famed for its expansive greenery and liveability – the exceptional location of the spacious residence itself served as a great source of inspiration for the company’s design director, James Tu. “The soothing pace of Xiangzhou allowed me to ponder the attitude of living around here – and from there, I knew I wanted to curate an otherworldly atmosphere that’s firmly based upon rich cultures,” he explains. The property is a ravishing three-storey home that houses a father who is…
