household name

Since its inception in 2008, homegrown brand Loveramics has become an integral part of the fabric of Hong Kong’s food-focused culture. Its distinctive dinnerware graces the tables of some of the city’s hottest restaurants and is found everywhere from Cathay Pacific’s First and Business Class lounges to award-winning chef May Chow’s Little Bao, not to mention in countless homes across the territory. Founded by William Lee, the brand was born from a desire to create covetable, contemporary and design-led tableware – a concept that is reflected in Loveramics’ 15,000-sq-ft Wan Chai showroom and office. Refreshed by local firm Bugs Design Consultants in the spring of 2017, the expansive, two-storey space encompasses both public and private areas, the former of which play host to an extensive library of vibrantly hued ceramic creations,…

We chat with three creative personalities who reflect on their inspiring projects featured in this month’s issue. COLIN WARD | PARTNER, FOSTER + PARTNERS A common thread with all our buildings in Hong Kong has been to make a positive contribution to the surrounding public realm. A key focus with The Murray has been to enhance the relationship of the building with the surrounding landscape. ELAINE LU | MANAGING DIRECTOR, LIM + LU Our favourite element of the final design is the element of surprise every time we walk into the space. The space is airy and open, which, coupled with the industrial aesthetic reminds us of our days in New York. TIINA ALAHUHTA-KASKO | CEO, MARIMEKKO It’s essential for you to feel good and comfortable in your own home. Forget the rules and have fun…

wild style

We all know that roses are red and violets are blue, but why not experiment with something a little more unique this Valentine’s Day? Fresh new floral design studio and offshoot of creative agency M&L, Floristry at M&L, invites you to eschew tradition and embrace a more contemporary approach to botanicals, one that advocates the beauty of flowers and foliage in their wild, natural form. From its luxuriant Sheung Wan location, Floristry at M&L conceives modern bouquets and even creates hand-blended aromatic soy candles and room sprays from essential oils. All of the plants it works with are seasonal and evoke an organic, ‘just-picked’ appeal that is rarely observed in more conventional floristry, making them ideal not only for special occasions, but throughout the year. Indeed, placing flowers around the home or…

new lease of life

“THE DESIGN INTENTION WAS TO MAINTAIN SOME OF THE NATURAL, RAW CHARACTERISTICS AND PAIR THESE WITH REFINED ELEMENTS” For a couple, moving in together provides the opportunity to integrate possessions and create a space that evokes a concert of styles and tastes – ones that are representative of each individual yet create a sense of harmony. The romance of this convergence is perhaps greater still when the newly cohabiting pair are merging their lives in an apartment conceived expressly for them, as was the case for the talented, animal-loving occupants of this 2,600-sq-ft loft located on the south side of Hong Kong Island. The couple enlisted the help of another creative duo, Elaine Lu and Vincent Lim of multidisciplinary studio Lim + Lu, to help mould the expansive location to fit their…

boundless joy

When you think of Marimekko, bold graphic designs and an ingenious use of colour naturally come to mind. Founded in 1951, the Finnish textile and clothing design company promotes a unique way of living and a freedom of mind through its home furnishings and fashion items. Much like the brand itself, the Helsinki home of Marimekko’s CEO, Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko, is brimming with a vibrant combination of textures, shades and patterns – and on top of all that, it's an embodiment of her affection for everyday life. "Our home is our nest – a sanctuary we furnished and decorated ourselves, a place intertwined with comfort, warmth and character," Tiina says, as she speaks of the apartment she shares with her husband, Antti, and their dog, Topi. "While it is the perfect spot…
