WHEN I LAUNCHED House & Home, I had my wish list of the people I wanted to feature most. It was an ambitious list of who I thought were the best of the best in our business: On my list was Ralph Lauren, Laura Ashley, Nina Campbell, Calvin Klein and Joe Brennan. You see, back then, if you drove past a fabulous restoration of a stately home or a new house to covet, chances were it was the work of Joe Brennan, Canada’s builder to the rich and famous. Nataschia Wielink and Kalin Falconer were sipping mimosas while browsing a pocket-size boutique in Williamsburg, N.Y., when they had a lightbulb moment: “Wouldn’t it be neat if we did something like this?” Kalin recalls asking. The friends returned to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., with the vision of opening their own cabinet of curiosities. Not long after, what used to be a run-down deli was transformed into the down-to-earth emporium that Kalin, an event florist, and Nataschia, a photographer, had imagined.
