The reinvented beach shack on the cover of the first edition of inside for 2020 could be a metaphor for most of the projects featured within. Australian architecture and interior design is asserting itself with more confidence than perhaps ever before. It is following its own unique path, shaped by geography, an inimitable environment and a style that is distinctly ours. Sure, we still look across the ocean for inspiration, but throwing caution to the wind and asserting our identity never felt so gratifying. This is first issue as the editor of inside. She is the former editor of Building Australia and SDQ magazines, and is the associate editor of Steel Profile magazine. She is also a founding member of the Australian Architecture Association, a cultural organisation that aims to promote contemporary architecture to the wider public. GABRIELLE REINHARDT Gabrielle Reinhardt is a writer, interior designer and stylist passionate about the local design industry. This IDEA turns 18! As one of year Australia’s oldest architecture and interior design awards, we’re pretty excited about this milestone. For starters we have intention , every of channelling our inner Aussie teenager and throwing one hell of an 18th birthday party at the Gala in November. Design Lives Here by Penny Craswell captures 21 Australian houses and apartments from an old weatherboard cottage with a 1980s extension in Melbourne to a tiny site that was once home to the Hobart Port Officer in colonial Australia. Curated by the Sydney-based editor and writer for Thames & Hudson Australia, Design Lives Here celebrates not only these homes, but also a single bespoke Australian-designed piece of furniture or lighting in each.
