Last June, I had the opportunity to meet with two representatives from Manos del Uruguay, Rodolfo Giosca and Cecilia Lalanne. The meeting proved to be a truly eye-opening experience for me. Although I had always admired Manos del Uruguay’s yarn and knew that it was hand-dyed by women in Uruguay, I had never known much about the company itself, nor what sets it apart from other yarn producers. My first revelation was learning that Manos is a nonprofit organization focused on a social mission. Manos del Uruguay was founded in 1968 with the mission of providing sustainable employment to otherwise disenfranchised women in rural parts of Uruguay. It consists of thirteen cooperatives scattered throughout the country and a central administrative office in Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital. The craftswomen in each cooperative specialize…

In “Get the Perfect Edge: Tubular Cast-ons, Part 1” (Interweave Knits Winter 2017), we looked at working a tubular cast-on using the folded method. In Part 2 of this series, we’ll make swatches using a yarnover technique to achieve virtually the same result as the folded method, and then we’ll use make-ones to get a similar, but slightly different, effect. NOTE: To calculate the initial number of chain stitches to place on the needle for both the yarnover and make-one methods, add one to the final number of working-yarn stitches desired (an odd number) and divide that number by two.
