‘More Land Rovers on TV? Yes, please It’s always good to see Land Rovers on the TV, especially when they’re the star of the show, rather than just being a prop or shown in passing in news stories. Getting Guy Martin behind the wheel of a Land Rover as part of a Channel 4 series will have got Land Rovers in front of more people – my phone kept pinging with messages asking if I knew about it. Having watched it, one of the significant bits was seeing his sheer enjoyment of competing in the trial. ‘GUY’S COMP SAFARI ATTEMPT WAS MUCH BETTER THAN IF I HAD ATTEMPTED THE ISLE OF MAN TT’ The story begins in January 2021, when the North One TV production company gets a commission from Channel 4 to make a four-part series centred on Guy Martin and his mate Cameron ‘Camy’ Whitworth, modifying ‘classic’ vehicles for racing and competing in them at venues scattered around Europe. The resulting series, Guy’s Garage, debuted in November. In that episode, Guy entered a Volvo 240 Estate in a Swedish ‘folk race’, a brutal cross between banger racing and rallycross. GUY MARTIN Guy – named after Guy Gibson, the RAF pilot who led the Dambusters raid in the Second World War – has always lived in his native Lincolnshire. By trade he is a lorry mechanic, starting as an apprentice with Volvo when he was 16. He went on to work for various commercial vehicle companies, including his dad’s. In 1998, he followed in his dad’s footsteps by taking up motorcycle racing and enjoyed considerable success, achieving 17 podium finishes at the Isle of Man TT before he retired in 2017. He started doing TV work in 2010, and his down-to-earth, enthusiastic nature soon won him a huge following.
