prost to das oktoberfest

There are certain weddings that happen to change the course of history drastically. Billy Idol’s White Wedding still reverberates through speakers; the red-hued nuptials in Game of Thrones came with its fair share of repercussions; and the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese led to the beer-fuelled revelling called ‘Oktoberfest.’ The wedding was publicly celebrated so as to put Bavarian identity at the forefront and to seal Munich’s position as the region’s seat of power. Its success in bringing the people together made it an annual event, and soon, businesses and landlords were invited to set up their stalls. The beer ‘palaces’ (as they’re known) came to be when breweries started getting involved in the set-up, and hops began to flood the grounds. Various other embellishments such as…

bridging the gap

We love the idea of SHEROES, and we’ve been partners for a while now. How has your vision changed since 2014? We’ve gotten bigger, better and badder! But, on a serious note, we’ve added a layer of technology that’s changing the way women engage online via a really slick app. This is a women-only space where our members have social conversations in a super constructive and safe environment, and do other fun stuff, too. You can attend video masterclasses and quiz experts in community chats. It’s all about investing in yourself and being your authentic self, which is sometimes the anti-thesis of social media, today. The app has around 30-plus communities to choose from: be it an artist-based community to women in tech, and a chat helpline where you can talk to…

Mosaic plots, mythology, philosophy and science fiction: Ashwin Sanghi mixes all these ingredients in his books. His latest work, Keepers Of The Kalachakra, narrates a fearsome tale of men who guard the Kalachakra or the wheel of time. And with this, Sanghi has quite successfully fermented a loyal fan base of bibliophiles. He believes a good book is imperative to a life well lived, so he’s listed his top five favourite reads of all time. THE ART OF WAR by Sun Tzu “This masterpiece of military strategy written 2,500 years ago can be used as direction for virtually all conflict, even in the modern world. In fact, it is a primer on how one can prevent conflicts and quickly resolve them when they do appear.” AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A YOGI by Paramahansa Yogananda “This is a book…

SUPERORGANISM When a band is composed of eight people, each from different parts of the world, and they remove their song from the internet just as it’s gaining an unfathomable amount of traction, you know you need to delve deeper into the group’s dynamics. ‘Something for your M.I.N.D.’ was a hit no one saw coming; with eccentric lyrics like “Make way, I’m in my Pepsi mood,” lead vocalist Orono Noguchi, who hails from Japan, managed to spearhead a tune that people couldn’t stop listening to—and they didn’t know why. The group’s self-titled album is out now, and they keep the bizarre tunes coming through its course. JORJA SMITH There’s a reason Drake, Kendrick Lamar and Stormzy have all featured this English R&B singer in their songs: it’s because her voice manages to blend…

Welcome to Maxim . What have you been up to? It’s been a few years, right? Well, hello Maxim! Of late, I have been involved in a couple of very interesting projects. On the writing front, I’ve co-written a dark comedy film with Rajat Kapoor. We’ve just finished shooting the film with a killer cast and it was a lot of fun. I also shot a game show for the web called the Desi Variety Show. And, now, I am doing a multi-city tour with Papa CJ and Danish Sait. In fact, I’m also shooting a game show for Colors TV, a family quiz show. You’re donning multiple hats. What do you like the most about your job? It lets me travel constantly and I truly enjoy travelling. Also, I love improv; it’s…
