SOCIAL DISTANCING, RC-STYLE! It sure has been an interesting year! With the Covid-19 quarantine and new social distancing protocols put into place, our RC hobby has been affected along with all other aspects of our society. This summer our RC events, competitions, and trade shows have been affected, with most canceled or postponed. From local club fun-flys to national and regional events, many have been shifted to 2021. To everyone’s disappointment, the Toledo RC Expo has been canceled for good! For 65 years, the Toledo RC Exposition, hosted by the Weak Signals club, has been a must-attend event for the entire RC community. More than just a trade show, the RC Expo brought together generations of modelers and RC flying buddies to enjoy each other's company in a social environment. Over…

DeHavilland DHC-6 Twin Otter Jim McQueen, Wading River, New York After buying this aircraft that had been designed and built by John LaBelle, Jim restored and repainted it and added two DLE 35RA engines spinning Xoar 3-blade propellers. The refinished plane is fiberglassed and painted with Rustoleum with custom vinyl graphics by Red5designs. The 130-inch-span aircraft weighs 48 pounds and is equipped with Hitec digital servos and a PowerBox iGyro for extra recovery time in case one engine stalls. Scampy Scott Kruize, Tukwila, Washington Scott started building this model in the 1980s from ’60s rudder-only plans designed by Owen Kampen, but the airframe ended up in his “someday” pile. After finding more time during the recent lockdowns, he added 3-channel control, a tiny BL-1504 brushless outrunner, and a 350mAh LiPo. Scampy weighs 9 ounces ready…

Screw Retainer When it comes to installing screw deep within your model airplane, often the screw will fall off the end of the screwdriver, even one with a magnetic tip. A good way to hold the screw in place is to slip a short length of fuel tubing over the end of the screwdriver. Slip the screw in place and the tubing will keep the fastener engaged on the end of the screw driver. An oldie but still a goodie. George Mack, Los Angeles, California 90-Degree Drive Often you will find that a screw has come loose in an area with limited access. Instead of taking apart your model, try this. Slip the required driver (hex screwdriver) into a box wrench of the appropriate size. Add a couple drops of CA glue and then…

stem education & rc airplanes

As more of our daily lives become dependent on computer programmers and engineers, schools are turning to STEM (Science Technology Engineering and mathematics) curriculum to teach students the skills that they need to someday work in these fields. Some schools have turned to model aviation, not only to teach their students the STEM curriculum, but also to teach problem-solving and teamwork skills. Private companies and clubs also contribute to STEM education in the community. PRIVATE SCHOOLS One of the schools using model aviation to teach STEM principles is West Michigan Aviation Academy, a private school primarily educating its students through aviation. The students are studying to eventually get careers in a field of the aviation industry. One of these fields is in UAVs, or drones. The students study every aspect of building,…

sullivan skywriter smoke pump

If you have ever been to an RC airshow, then you’ve seen aerobatic airplanes using smoke during their flight routines. When used properly, smoke systems can add a great deal to your flight presentation. The uniqueness it gives to specific segments of your flight routine will increase their appeal and pizzazz to both the spectators and your fellow pilots alike. The Sullivan SkyWriter Pump electronically controlled smoke pump for onboard smoke systems, uses the same ultrasonically sealed direct drive pump head as Sullivan’s other quality electric fuel pumps, and uses a miniature microprocessor controlled electronic pulse drive speed control. You can set smoke rate with your transmitter trim, and mix the smoke pump with the throttle channel if desired. It requires a 6V to 12V battery packs. Note: For best results…

du-bro products tru-spin prop balancer

The Tru-Spin Prop Balancer (#499) from Du-Bro Products is a great shop accessory that every RC modeler and pilot must have. With RC airplanes, vibration is the enemy and whether you are an electric, glow or gas airplane pilot, balancing your prop is a must. A balanced prop reduces the wear and tear on your aircraft by greatly reducing prop induced vibration, which goes a long way in eliminating premature failure to all your RC components. A little time spent in the shop will give your aircraft a much longer lifetime. The most precise balancer available today, the Tru-Spin Prop Balancer’s specially designed locking cone securely centers and locks props on to the balancing shaft. The balancing shaft is manufactured out of hardened steel and is then “centerless” ground producing an…
