FUTURE OF RC In this issue, we have an in depth article explaining how the new FCC Remote ID rules will affect the way we all fly RC. Author Patrick Sherman goes into great detail how the new rules—which go into effect in 2023—will apply to Unmanned Aerial Systems, which includes our RC airplanes and helicopters. For traditional RC pilots who fly at club fields and AMA sanctioned events, the future is not as bad as we first thought. ALSO IN THIS ISSUE We have a Flight Report for the Legend Hobby/VQ Junkers Ju 52 Tri-motor, a detailed construction article for the Shockwave, and a proposed Unlimited Reno Racer by Mark Rittinger complete with full-size plans you can buy at AirAgestore.com. We also pay a visit to the workshop with the 2020 Mr.…

BOEING 737 Thomas Perry, Commerce City, Colorado PILOT PROJECT OF THE MONTH Living in Texas before he moved to Colorado inspired Thomas to create this double scheme on his Freewing 737. He prepped the jet with polycrylic, then painted with Rustoleum spray paint. He notes that the “paint was a little tricky with the base white coat wanting to peel when the masking tape was removed. Peeling the tape very slowly and at a sharp 45-degree angle seemed to work best.” Callie Graphics supplied the Texas star, Colorado C, tail decals, and the heart on the belly. Look closely and you’ll see chocks made from 1-inch balsa cut into triangles with .020 safety cable run through the middle and yellow shrink tube for handles. ELDER 40 Bruce Rumrey, Foley, Alabama Bruce converted his Top Flite kit…

Soap Lube When it comes to threading screws into hardwood, it can be very difficult to install the screw—even with a pilot hole drilled. The wood may even split. I have found that by rubbing the screw threads on a bar of soap, the soap acts as an effective lubricant and makes the screw much easier to thread into place. This also minimizes the chances of stripping out the screw head. Bill Robbie, Southington, Connecticut Flame Cleaning Often while working on your model, your hobby knife can get coated with dried CA glue. Once dry it is extremely difficult to clean off. Instead of just replacing the blade, try using a torch to heat it up. The glue will soften and become very easy to remove. Don’t use a lot of heat and make…

remembering frank tiano a true modeling icon

Publishers’ note: We met Frank more years ago than we want to remember and felt privileged to call him a close friend. His absolute passion was airplanes and the attention to detail involved. He was a perfectionist who built the most beautiful models, so it was no surprise that he ended up running the most prestigious events in the world. They were run flawlessly because of that attention to detail. We are proud that our company was with him from the beginning as a sponsor. Frank had incredible energy, fueled by his passion and zest for life. He was impatient and, on occasion, would sound off, but only because he cared. He cared for so many people and things. He cared both for stray cats and the dogs he owned. He…

the future of rc

On Saturday, September 16, 2023, the world of uncrewed aircraft systems will change forever as the Federal Aviation Administration’s rules on remote identification come into effect. As a remote pilot, it’s not too soon to be asking, “What does this mean for me?” A little over a year ago, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) managed a feat that no one else has ever accomplished, before or since: it brought together the diverse factions of the small uncrewed aircraft system (sUAS) community. For one, glorious moment recreational pilots, commercial operators, aircraft manufacturers, industry advocates, educational institutions, first responders, trade associations and even crewed aviation groups were united in a common cause: criticizing the FAA. What had the agency done to earn this universal opprobrium? Merely released its long-awaited Proposal for the rules to…
