you say goodbye, i say hello

MATCHES We love a good engagement story here at the Weekly, and there were plenty to swoon over in 2019, including (from top) Alex Rodriguez’s sunset proposal to Jennifer Lopez, Princess Beatrice’s betrothal to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, and Katy Perry’s match with Orlando Bloom. Actresses Emma Stone and Scarlett Johansson also announced their impending marriages. BIRTHS They were famous before they saw the light of day. In Hollywood, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively had a daughter, and Richard Gere and Alejandra Silva had a son, but in the Weekly world, no 2019 birth was more highly anticipated than that of gorgeous Archie, born to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on May 6. DEATHS Hollywood lost some heavyweights in 2019, including the incomparable Doris Day, who died in May, aged 97. Also farewelled were Easy…

from the editor

What a truly incredible year it’s been - joyous, heartbreaking, thrilling, sorrowful and exquisitely beautiful. It has been such an honour to bring you all the events of 2019 – sharing those wonderful highs and heart-warming tales, but also to have your company during the lows. On the next page we cover the devastating news from Whakaari/White Island – a cruel twist at the end of what has already been a tough year . But again, listening to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s words, I feel buoyed by the spirit of everyday New Zealanders - of their bravery , compassion and generosity. I’ll never forget that spirit when it came to the fore after the March 15 attacks. I headed to my local mosque several times after work, not only to pay my respects…

‘we will hold you close’

As the Weekly went to print, the list of casualties was yet to be confirmed, but the magnitude of this week’s disaster at Whakaari/White Island was difficult to bear. Coming just two weeks before Christmas, the eruption stole precious lives, critically wounded dozens, and broke the hearts of Kiwis – and indeed, the world, with so many international visitors caught up in the tragedy. The morning after the disaster, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern flew to meet with those affected, including people lying injured at Whakatane Hospital, and brave first responders. At the Whakatane Fire Station, she spoke to some of the helicopter pilots, firefighters and ambulance staff who fought to save lives. Later that day, back in Wellington, she addressed Parliament, offering her condolences to the victims and commending the first responders for…

cooking with sass! paula’s year takes the cake

Clad in a bubblegum pink jumpsuit, paired with fabulous pastel-hued heels and a lick of fuchsia lippy, Paula Bennett is a candy-coloured vision as she warmly welcomes the Weekly onto her photoshoot set. Camera-ready even before our make-up artist has a chance to pick up her brushes, Paula’s in the mood for celebrating. She’s just bought a new house (in west Auckland, naturally), is about to make her reality television debut (more on that in a minute) and has dubbed this one of her best years yet. And, of course, she’s undertaken an incredible weight-loss journey in the most public of forums after having a gastric band fitted two years ago, and is now happily at her goal weight. Indeed, so much has changed for National’s deputy leader it’s hard to know…

duchess diaries meghan’s working holiday

She’s supposed to enjoying a six-week break back in her home country, away from the pressures of royal life. But Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, just can’t help herself – she’s still working on causes close to her heart. While on her holiday in Los Angeles with husband Prince Harry and son Archie, Meghan (38) has been having secret meetings with LA-based PR adviser Keleigh Thomas Morgan on building a US strategy for the Sussex Foundation, which she has set up with Harry. Keleigh has been helping Meghan with a fundraising drive and charity launch, even though the duchess has supposedly stepped back from royal duties during her time off. “Meghan may officially be on her royal break, but don’t believe she is taking her foot off the gas,” says a source. “The break and…

collateral damage

The scandal surrounding Prince Andrew’s involvement with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is continuing to cause waves for the royal family, with his daughter Princess Beatrice now being forced to cancel her engagement party. Beatrice (31) and fiancé Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi (36) had sent out invitations to a lavish event at London’s trendy Chiltern Firehouse restaurant for December 18 but pulled the plug because of concerns that the occasion would be ruined by paparazzi looking for Andrew (59). Sources say the party is now no longer being held then and, if it does go ahead, will likely be switched to a venue that isn’t so high-profile. “This is likely to be the start of concessions Beatrice is going to have to make because of her father,” says an insider. “It remains to be…
