Then & Now WHAT started as a fledgling fraternity of young men who were interested in modifying road-going cars and turning them into hot rods has now grown into an industry with considerable size, structure and become a respectable and recognised segment of motoring in NZ. The catalyst for the initial embryo here was the availability of American hot rod magazines, a proliferation of aging American cars and good old Kiwi ingenuity. Put the three ingredients together and presto, hot rods were created. It took about ten years from when the first hot rods were built here until a governing body (NZHRA) was formed in 1964, then another three until this magazine (NZHRM) was born in 1967. Keeping up with Technology HI PAUL, interesting to read your last couple of editorials on the changes technology and government are making to our lives and our interests. We seem to live in a world of ever increasing rules and regulations, and have to be ever vigilant that these don’t impact too much on our sport. I can drive a computer to some degree, but many of the techie things that are happening are beyond me. The one great thing about technology is that I have been able to keep up with a lot of the excellent showing the Kiwis have accomplished at this year’s Speedweek. • High School T THIS year Whangarei R&CC has combined with Tikipunga High School in Whangarei to build a T-bucket in the school’s automotive workshop. The club has invested $10,000 into the project while Protecta Insurance & Kaspas Automatics have generously helped to recondition the gearbox. There have also been other sponsorships from around the country by way of discounted parts etc. When the project is complete, they hope to sell it to the highest bidder, and hopefully, recover the initial investment and donate any profit back into the Automotive Academy for further projects. Good bones come from a rust-free California cab and a die-straight chassis. All the small parts were included inside the cab and the entire project and/or anything new can be obtained direct from Derek. IN a small country settlement of Galloway, just a stone’s throw from Alexandra lives a very talented young engineer by the name of Todd Sutherland. Other than farms in the area Todd runs probably the only other business his engineering shop called TS engineering and loves to create stuff especially one-off cars. He knows the ‘look’ that they need and everything he builds is low. Having already built a very low 350 Chev powered 1950 Chev pickup with his own box-section chassis he had an inkling for an evil chopped and channelled, pavement-pounder. Before buying his property in Galloway Todd was based in Dunedin where he hooked up with Hurricane Rodders and that’s where the coupe was started. BODY: Totally reworked 1931 Chevrolet coupe chopped 4” and channelled 5”. Aftermarket headlights, repro ‘31 Chev tail lights. All bodywork and paint were done by Todd, not sure of colour! CHASSIS: Original 1931 Chev kicked up 12” at the rear, extra crossmembers, all engineering work by owner. SUSPENSION: Super Bell 4” dropped I-beam, hairpin radius rods, transverse spring. Rear 9” Ford 4.11 ratio Tru-Trac coil-overs and adjustable 4-bars. Steering is via a Volkswagen Kombi box. BRAKES: XF Falcon rotors, Commodore alloy calipers, Ford drum brakes on rear, Toyota Hi-Ace pedal box (modified) and a Commodore master cylinder.
