Fear THIS month I thought I’d break away in a completely new direction and in a lighthearted way get inside your heads and mess with your paradigms and thinking patterns. But why title this column fear? I’ll get there, and all will become clear, trust me! For many years we used to race midgets, mostly at Western Springs, but all over NZ and also a 15-race tour of the USA. We raced and performed at the highest level possible, representing NZ and beating Aussies and Americans on occasion. Trends HI PAUL, Interesting editorial you wrote about the many trends in rodding over the past years, now with increasing technology, we’re confronted with, new avenues of modification are available to simplify all styles of rod building. Amongst these, oxygen sensing units that when placed in the exhaust system take the guesswork out of carb tuning, one of the first that comes to mind. There’s available electronic injectors built into old favourites like Stromberg carbs for those preferring traditional appearance and without the leakage, distributors without points to adjust and speedo units easily dialled in regardless of transmission, diff ratio or tire size used. California Coupe THIS 1930 Ford Model A coupe landed recently via Chuck’s. It’s an older restoration needing some TLC but with a spit ‘n polish will be roadworthy and out and about in no time. Black Suede Fiver BARRY Connolly landed this black suede 5-window recently. It’s stance and rake are spot on while under the hood is a smallblock hooked to stock 3-speed and banjo rear. Plans are to replace the belly-button smallblock with a traditional flathead V8. No Feathers THIS ’65 T-bird landed recently via Chucks. It’s a clean car and would make an excellent daily driver here in NZ. GARY’S deuce roadster was originally an Australian production car, and all of its early pre-1965 history is unknown. What we do know is there are 54 years of documented history since the day Maurice Campbell bought the deuce on 2nd October 1965 for £170. Maurice built into a hot rod over the next year working from a single car garage in Auckland. The hot rod deuce featured a brand new 283ci Chevy engine which cost a whopping cost £345 from Tappenden Motors. The engine cost twice as much as the entire car and was backed by a Jaguar gearbox and a1940 Ford rear end. The car was painted bright red and lavished in chrome before being featured in colour in NZHRM in Feb/March ’68 issue. Maurice didn’t keep the roadster…

axed  project bloodhound ssc becomes stillborn.

IN a totally ambitious endeavour, Project Bloodhound had intended to set a new World Land Speed Racing mark of 1,000 mph on land but has been ‘axed’ due to a shortfall in funding. Sadly the British based team lead by Sir Richard Noble who came into recognition back in 1983 by setting a new world mark of 633 mph on the Black Rock Desert in Nevada with Thrust 2. This success was followed 14 years later on the same site with a new Thrust SSC car raising the bar further with a stellar two-way run average of 763 mph as required by the FIA, driven by Royal Air Force pilot Andy Green, a speed that additionally broke the sound barrier heard audibly by all present at the time. bloodhound project attracts new owner.

IN THE short time since the announcement of Project Bloodhound being axed a new owner has stepped forward with intention to see the audacious project through. British entrepreneur Ian Warhurst has purchased the entire project for an unknown sum from the projects administrators. Renowned for his management skills Warhurst has recently sold his successful engineering firm Melett, a turbocharger rebuild company to U.S. based Webtec Corporation. With the Bloodhound acquisition Warhurst has formed a new company, Grafton LSR Ltd. From here the new company will initially take stock following which a timeline will be produced culminating in the attempt on the readied site on the Hakskeen Pan Desert in northern South Africa.
