seek (help) and you shall receive

It has been many years since my wife and I owned a business, and yet the stress of that whole experience is still fresh in our minds. Nothing truly prepares you for the endless challenges, the sleepless nights, the financial pressures and the anxiety that comes with business ownership. There are those who take it all in their stride; who thrive under such circumstances. But there are also others who simply struggle from day one. There are those for whom business ownership impacts heavily on their mental well-being. They question why they ever signed up for the gig in the first place. Are we all cut out for business ownership? Unfortunately, some of us clearly aren’t. It does require mental fortitude; the ability to pivot quickly, to acquire new skills and…

TIME FOR URGENCY ON AI RESEARCH BY the Artificial Intelligence Forum of New Zealand (AI Forum) calls for urgent action to progress the use of AI to address some of the country’s most pressing social, environmental and economic challenges, and not wait for a formal Government-led national strategy. The ‘Towards Our Intelligent Future’ study positions AI as a fundamental tool to tackle issues highlighted by the Treasury’s new Living Standards Framework for Wellbeing and the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It reveals how New Zealand can benefit from AI supporting well-being and sustainability, along with the multibillion-dollar boost to the economy. The study also shows New Zealand is performing reasonably well in the international AI discussion, but highlights an urgent need to invest more and secure more home grown talent. Ben…

the fintech devotee

It’s not difficult to see why Kristen Lunman was nominated for the New Zealand Women of Influence Innovator of the Year awards in 2018. For a number of years Kristen has been a leading fintech start-up advocate. She has worked as a senior strategy professional both here and overseas, and her reputation in the start-up ecosystem includes time spent scaling Wipster in the global arena and directing Kiwibank’s Fintech Accelerator – where she encouraged and championed Kiwi start-ups on the international stage. Then in 2017 Kristen found herself on the receiving end of an incubator programme when she pursued the idea of challenging the status quo and opening up the US sharemarket to all Kiwi investors. Launched in September 2018, Hatch is a “game-changing” self-directed digital investing platform. It’s a “one-stop…

hamilton cbd celebrates in grand style

It was an evening of stunning celebration and recognition for the central city’s businesses, and it was held in a space specially created by Hamilton event management and hire company Royal Laboratorie – the top floor of the former IRD building overlooking the Claudelands Bridge. The annual Hamilton CBD Celebration Awards on September 11 wowed the guests with its jaw-dropping décor and displays, and its visual insights into the transformation of the city’s CBD. But Hamilton’s vibrant business community was the true star of this spectacular occasion – and fittingly MC Kelvyn Eglinton, CEO of Momentum Waikato, started the night off by paying tribute to the high calibre of business people in the room. It was acknowledged that Hamilton’s CBD continues to gain momentum and it is vitally important to recognise the…
