As at-home entertaining becomes ubiquitous, the outdoor luxury kitchen is restyling itself as the life of the backyard party. Every bit as glamorous, culinary-savvy, and costly as its indoor counterpart, it’s the command center around which every recreational activity revolves and around which everyone gathers. In addition to serving gourmet fare, which often rivals that of a five-star restaurant, it also serves as a poolside cocktail bar, nightclub, and an entertainment center. It’s a caterer’s, professional chef’s, and home cook’s delight. So it’s not surprising that when the new owners of a chic villa in Brentwood Park, one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Los Angeles, renovated the residence’s outdoor space, they commissioned the iconic Italian kitchen manufacturer Officine Gullo to custom design a gourmet kitchen that caters to their—and their guests’—every whim. “They wanted…

By all accounts, it was a memorable night. Kevin Clark, an architect, and his clients, a recently retired couple with busy careers in New York City, were sitting in the bar of the iconic Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan, over a table of bourbon neat, a photo of a front door the owners had brought, and cocktail napkins marked with house sketches. That evening, everything the three had been working toward came to fruition: the concept for what would be the couple’s new full-time residence, on a spacious riverfront property in Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina. “It was a eureka moment,” says Clark, a senior principal with Historical Concepts in Atlanta. The architectural firm had worked with the family for three years on design iterations, pausing when needed, while the couple clinched their decision…

Shaped privet hedges meet untamed swathes of periwinkle hydrangeas and layer upon layer of herbaceous plantings that sway in the Atlantic salt breeze. Greenwich, Connecticut–based landscape designer James Doyle and his team at James Doyle Design Associates have cultivated a Nantucket sanctuary here on the island’s bluffs. The clients had very specific needs and wants because they spend a lot of time on the island from mid-summer into the fall. The large family gatherings that they host form the mainstay of their season. “Much of the landscape design was programmed around their need for outdoor entertaining and coastal views. The plant palette was dictated by varieties that flower at the height of summer,” explains Doyle. Another consideration was the heartiness of the plantings, which would need to be sufficiently salt-tolerant to…

Even within the luxe aura of California’s Golden Coast, Malibu is a starry place. One of the town’s most desirable enclaves is Malibu Colony, a quiet nexus of culture, natural beauty, and sophisticated architecture. One thing the neighborhood doesn’t have is lots of space. No surprise, then, that when landscape designer Scott Shrader, principal of Shrader Design in West Hollywood, was asked to look at a property whose homeowners hoped for a new landscape, he saw potential—including spectacular ocean views—but not enough space to create something special. “When I first arrived, there was the house in the beginning stages, a pool, and a tennis court, with limited landscaping around them,” Shrader recalls. “I told the owners there was nothing I could do but put a hedge in.” Then he noticed an underused 1920s…
